The unabridged version of my Argus article (23/4/13): Employment growth in the local digital, media & technology sector

Employment growth in the local digital, media & technology sector Caroline Morris of Wired Sussex Working for Wired Sussex I’m at the heart of the local digital, media and technology hub. It is my job to help our member companies find the right people with the right skills to grow their businesses.  The digital sector is all about talent and it is one of the strengths of Brighton that talented people do want to be here. Most of the digital companies that Wired Sussex supports are small and many of them are start-ups. They are driven by people who are passionate about …

Developing Young People’s Skills in Digital Media; how Brighton University student James has found working with the Cherokee and UK schools.

By James Shreeve, Digital Media Arts student at the University of Brighton At first I was somewhat apprehensive about the Cherokee nation project as it would not only move me away from our creative comfort zone but would also require working with children and teaching them programs that I have only just recently mastered myself so that would be rather interesting to say the least. For a while the project itself was alive in email chatter between work colleagues. But unbeknownst to us, the deadline for the project was swiftly moving forward so it was time to get to work …

The growth of the local games sector; from newborns to teenagers..

We’ve all heard about the successes of the games sector, especially with the ‘Black Pebble’ companies that have formed as a result of the Disney’s Black Rock office closure.  I thought it time to recap and take another look at how they’re doing, especially drilling down on some stats I’ve been examining, and to hear how the studios are managing their workforce to fit in with their growth…. Firstly I can see that over the past 12 months a healthy 22 companies have been using our Jobs Board to post a total of 46 games vacancies (of which over half …

ReCreate and The FuseBox – what it means to me!

It’s not often you get to work for an organisation where there’s opportunity to turn the work that you do into something that will really make a difference to the sector as well as the local community. I’m really lucky to be working for Wired Sussex at a time where we’ve managed to win some big projects and to have a hand in helping drive the biggest positive changes for the sector I think Wired Sussex has ever seen. Big projects with EU funding obviously come packaged with a lot of guidelines, deliverables and complex wording, but here’s my take …
