Tim Gatland - Chief Executive, Fund4Games
Brighton, Guildford and Oxford events

Tim is chief executive of F4G Software plc (Fund4Games) which was set up in collaboration with Edinburgh finance house Noble & Company. Tim has a project management background in the software industry and prior to setting up F4G, he was chief operations officer at VIS entertainment. Tim was also recently named as one of the 'Top 25 Businessmen In UK Game Development' by Develop magazine.

F4G provides a combination of project management and finance that allows a publisher to defer paying for a game until delivery of the gold master. In doing so, it also protects developers from many of the problems they encounter with publishers during development.

Sherree Westell - Lewis Silkin
Guildford event

Sherree Westell is a partner in the Media Brands and Technology group at leading new media City law firm Lewis Silkin. Sherree specialises in providing advice and assistance to high-growth potential digital and new media companies including games companies. Sherree and her colleagues have recently worked on a number of games development contracts, negotiating key commercial issues (including terms relating to advances and new versions) and the provision of IP advice (including the ownership and licensing of rights and the use of third party brands and materials).

Gillian Cordall - Lewis Silkin
Oxford event

Gillian Cordall is a partner in the Media Brands and Technology group at leading new media City law firm Lewis Silkin. Gillian specialises in providing advice and assistance to digital and new media companies and, in particular has a wealth of experience acting for games companies, including publishers, developers and middleware and services providers. Gillian and her team have recently worked on a number of high profile games development contracts for well known UK independent developers: negotiating their publishing agreements and providing advice in areas such as trade mark registration and protection, music issues, licensing and arrangements with sub-contractors .

Frank Jennings - Rawlinson Butler
Brighton event

Frank trained in-house with Psygnosis Ltd, a computer games publisher and subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. After qualifying in 1999 he worked in Osborne Clarke's technology team in London before joining Rawlison Butler in 2004. Frank has a Masters degree in information technology law and intellectual property. He advises on all aspects of technology and intellectual property including games and software development, publishing, licensing and distribution as well as brand protection and remote gambling. Frank is a regular speaker on technology law matters and a contributor to technology and intellectual property-related publications.

Alan Welsman - Head of Games, Orange
Guildford event

Prior to joining Orange in June 2001, Alan Welsman was Marketing Director for Telia's mobile portal - Speedy Tomato. Before this AW spent 10 years in the PC and videogames business, 7 of which were spent at Sony, latterly as Marketing Director for Sony PlayStation overseeing the launch of both the original PlayStation and PS2 and around 150 games launches.

Alan also spent 2 years at the beginning of his career as a Press Officer working in the music business at independent music promotions companies and 2 major record labels, East West and CBS (Sony Music) Records.

Julian Lynn-Evans - Consultant (Ex Activision)

Julian's extensive career in publishing spans more than 25 years, first in print then interactive. His impressive CV includes 5 years as Vice President of Activision's European Studios from its inception in 1998 to 2003; before which he was Senior Vice President of European Publishing for Virgin Interactive Entertainment between 1994 and 1998. Prior to that Julian launced and headed up Philips Media in Europe. He now lives between Brighton and London and works as a consultant to the video game community and is a partner in a leading search and selection firm.

Paul Munford is a Communications and Business Development Director with more than eight years' experience in mobile, digital media, web and journalism. He has an unrivalled list of mobile entertainment contacts in Europe and the US, speaks regularly at industry events and is widely respected as a writer on mobile entertainment

Nigel Nicholas – Chief Executive Officer, Move2Mobile
Brighton and Oxford events

Over 25 years experience at Director and VP Level in both global telecommunication and small start-ups companies. Nigel was CFO of AT&T (UK and Ireland) for six years and as Director of Strategy and Operations for Lucent Technologies' Mobile Infrastructure business unit, helping grow revenues from zero to over $1.2 billion. Until the formation of Move2Mobile, Nigel had been working in the start up and SME environment.


Researchers

Andrew Grantham

Dr. Andrew Grantham has extensive knowledge of the business of the Electronic Games Industry (EGI). He executed CENTRIM's regional work on the EGI for SEEDA. This work generated a series of product and process benchmarks, and a deeper understanding of business models employed within the sector; the results were published in a report entitled Getting a Measure of the Games Development Business: Strategies to Meet Global Challenges. Andrew also recently worked on an EU project, MobiCom, which composed four scenarios for mobile commerce. New business models were derived from the scenarios. Other topics investigated included mobile technology diffusion patterns, enhancing social inclusion; and access to services and regulatory challenges.

Robert Defillippi

Bob DeFillippi is Professor and Chair of Management and Director of the Center for Innovation and Change Leadership at the Sawyer School of Management, Suffolk University, Boston, USA. Bob's research has most recently focused on knowledge-based perspectives to innovation. Other areas of research include industry clusters in high technology industries and project-based learning; for example, filmmaking and digital entertainment. Bob recently completed an international comparative study of creative work and creative workers in the USA, French and UK video game industries, and a collaborative research project with SRI International (a not-for-profit research institute) to examine innovation best practices and the facilitators and impediments to translating innovation principles into effective practice.

Jonathan Sapsed

Dr. Jonathan Sapsed is a CENTRIM/AIM (Advanced Institute of Management Research) Fellow working on the theme of 'sustaining innovation'. He was Project Manager of a recent project called 'Managing Knowledge Spaces: Mapping the Effects of Dispersed Teamworking on Project Performance' which involved the development of an online benchmarking tool (www.knowledgespaces.org). Prior to this work, Jonathan was involved in a project which developed a process model for knowledge management routines in businesses. His doctorate examined the strategies of electronic games developers in the UK and the USA, including a Visiting Scholarship at the University of California at Berkeley.
