dSCAPE/05 Portfolio Clinic

Date: Tuesday 8 November 2005
Time: 6-10.30pm
Venue: Fabrica, Brighton

A massive thank you to the Wired Sussex team for making Tuesday night so amazing and for introducing me to so many interesting, friendly and inspiring people. Best nine pounds I have spent in a long time, I got a wide range of helpful advice and feedback.
Jon May - Portfolio Clinic attendee

Brighton’s very first Digital Festival got off to a successful start with the dSCAPE/05 portfolio clinic which received positive reports from all attendees. The night, which aimed to put established creatives in contact with up and coming talent, proved successful in providing an insight into an industry that is often a forgotten career choice for many graduates and young people.

Attendees were asked to bring an example of work to show to local creative companies, enabling them to discuss future directions for their chosen medium. The purposefully ambiguous requirement of a ‘portfolio’ meant that the work brought to the evening was vast, varied and exciting enough to maintain the interests of those offering advice. Work ranged from graphic art and product design to animation, but the interpretation of digital media didn’t stop there, one participant brought a box of inventions for advisors to pick through.

Representatives from local creative companies included: 72 Dots, amoeba, Blunt74, Babel Media, Crush, Kuju, Liquid Light , Moshi Machine, Nixon McInnes , Red Design , Republique, Wild Dog Design.

Those offering advice proved that they hadn’t forgotten their roots by giving support and encouragement to the keen and yet-to-be-cynical young people. With many companies having a queue of people waiting for their advice they demonstrated that there is much unrealised support for creative ideas. Words of advice were aided by free flowing beer and company representatives found that they too, got much from the night.

The quality of the students’ work has been very high, each year I’m surprised by the talent that’s out there’.
Ed Templeton, Red Design - Portfolio Clinic Advisor.
