ROOTED
Animation by: Victor Olusola Opeyokun
Created by a talented British Nigerian animator, Rooted follows a man as he acknowledges personal sentiments of urban isolation. His tale is narrated to the beat of African drums and attempts to reunite the disharmony of his environment. While finding the city's own rhythm he sheds his anxieties and dances to a tempo that describes his journey of reunification.

AFRICA ANIMATED!
Despite efforts by broadcasters and the audiovisual community in Africa, children's programmes are mostly imported from abroad.
In order to address this issue, UNESCO launched Africa Animated!, an initiative that assembles resources and expertise for the production of children's animated cartoons in Africa. The following cartoons are the result of this initiative

JOZI ZOO
Animated by: Mike Scott
Written by: John Vlismas
John Vlismas is one of South Africa's most prolific comedians and his animated zoo takes a tongue in cheek look at the inhabitants of Johannesburg.
When we first meet the lion absently filing his nails we realise he is the gay black man, bona fide queen of the zoo. The wheeler-dealer meerkat is the Indian city dweller and the hard partying bushbaby is youth culture.

BEYOND FREEDOM
Directed and produced by: Jacqui Trowell, Eric Oldrin and Emma Kaye
Beyond Freedom is an animated documentary which traces the lives of four South Africans through a changing society.
Each on their own personal path to freedom, the narrators create an unflinching account of the overwhelming realities that challenge a struggling new nation. The carefully woven layers of experience also give hope as they demonstrate the ambitious tenacity of a new democracy.
The aesthetic reflects the underground art scene and culture swelling from the streets of South Africa. Using a variety of visual directions, the animation mixes seamlessly with live action.

AND THERE IN THE DUST
Directed and produced by: Lara Foot Newton, Gerhard Marx and Wesley France
Starring: Mncedisi Shabangu and Kholeka Qwabe
And There in the Dust is a harrowing, true account of the rape of a nine month old baby. The deeply shaken consciousness of South Africa is captured in this animation and live performance.
Though narrating an unspeakable act of violence, the calming voice adds a thoughtful sensitivity to the story and the symbolic portrayal of events makes it uniquely approachable and poignant.
In the tradition of South African story-telling, the animation combines striking visual imagery with a sense of magic realism and addresses an atrocious issue with the utmost delicacy.
