Lead Developer

Experienced software developer wanted to help spark a mass corporate breakout.

Escape the City is a small team based in Brighton. We help people stuck in the rat race to do something different with their lives. Founded on the belief that there is more to life than doing work that you don’t believe in, our platform helps people find exciting alternative jobs, discover new organisations and network with like-minded people. We started over 9 years ago in London and have grown to over 500,000 users and learned a lot along the way. There are people all over the world doing new and exciting things with their lives as a result of our platform.

After almost 10 years we are currently in the middle of completely rebuilding our platform.

What are we building?

Our mission is to help 1,000,000 find work that matters to them and the world. Part of the product vision focuses around rebuilding the current product and transforming it into a community platform that helps people find relevant Job and project-based work, career change programmes, content, events etc. It also helps employers post their jobs, aggregate their jobs to other platforms and organise their applications.

Think of it as a curated purpose-led version of Linkedin & glassdoor with the emphasis on discovery.

If you’d be interested in putting your name to something like this - as the lead developer of a small, agile, no-bureaucracy, no-bullshit, high-quality development team that aspires to ship products that impress - please read on. We’d love to talk you through our vision in person and explore whether there’s a good fit.

What is the role?

The Lead Developer role based at the Escape House Brighton, involves working directly alongside the Co-founder Dom Jackman to implement and shape the future platform.

  • You will want to get stuff done and ship. This isn’t a managerial role.

  • You’ll need to be a great communicator, managing expectations and working with our small team in Brighton.

  • Above all you will care about helping find work that matters to them and the world after all the product you will be working on will shape thousands of people’s lives

  • You can’t wait to see real people (escapees) use your work knowing that it will change their lives. You’re patient and have a sense of humour

What do you get?

  • A unique opportunity to take a product that is already changing peoples’ lives to the next level and beyond.

  • A great working environment - at the Escape House in Brighton.

  • A job in the precise opposite of a boring, corporate company - we practice what we preach.

Why should you care?

We have been going for 9 years but we are really just getting started. We have a proven record and a really ambitious plan.  This is a great time to get involved with a concept that is going places. The product vision is really clear but there is still absolutely masses to learn and build. So you’d be coming on board to really help us shape something. There are tons of challenges and if you’re the kind of person who likes working on everything from the overall architecture to the tiny little details you’ll enjoy this work. The final reason you should care? We want this website to be beautiful - not just in terms of what it looks like but also in terms of how it works... and if you aspire to build something which is both of those things then we’d love if you did it with us.
