Fancy Working Abroad?

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Global Watch Secondments help small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) to send employees abroad or receive key people from another country. Experience shows that these are very effective ways of acquiring the knowledge, advanced skills and technology essential to developing a business strategically.

Project eligibility: A project requiring the acquisition of advanced skills and/or knowledge primarily scientific or technological in nature, not readily available in the UK, needed for the development or improvement of a product, process or service by a UK-based SME and which has the potential to generate excellent commercial returns.

A government grant is available to successful applicants to part-fund secondments, whilst the assistance of experienced Regional Consultants and the Global Watch Secondments Coordinator helps companies gain the maximum advantage from secondments.

Global Watch Secondments offer UK companies the opportunity to exploit knowledge from almost any country in the world: to date secondments have been made to over 25 countries, including: Australia, Azerbaijan, Cuba, China, Japan, Norway, South Africa, the USA and the Ukraine.

Outgoing secondments allow UK companies to send an employee abroad for between three and twelve months to work in one or more companies or other centres of excellence. The work they carry out in their host organisations enables them to acquire knowledge, technology and advanced skills, which provide their employers with the potential to improve productivity and competitiveness, whilst broadening their own knowledge and experience.

Incoming secondments allow UK companies to receive a technically skilled secondee from a company, or centre of excellence abroad for between three and six months. The objective is to improve access to technical knowledge and advanced skills available abroad to improve UK businesses' competitiveness.
