SMS and e-mails get the fastest reply

New research from Pure360 and YouGov shows that text messages elicit the fastest response when communicating with friends and family

New online research released today from digital marketing provider Pure360 and YouGov reveals that over half of Britons (55%) say they respond fastest to SMS/text messages from family and friends compared to other forms of communication. Email comes in as the second most effective (22%) and voice messages are third, with just 12% claiming they are fastest at responding to a voice message from friends and family.



Pure360’s online survey of over 2000 people also reveals that Twitter is one of the least effective ways to get a fast response from friends or family. Only 1% of respondents claimed they responded quickest to tweets. Facebook was also surprisingly ineffective with only 5% responding fastest to a message or wall-post.



Abi Jacks, Head of Marketing at Pure360 said: “With the huge enthusiasm for social media these days, we were surprised to find it quite so irrelevant and slow as a conversational tool. Interestingly, there are as many people responding quickly to tweets as there are responding quickly to postcards.”



The research from Pure360 also reveals that more women say they respond fastest to a text message (60% women vs 47% men) and men are more likely than their female counterparts to say they are fastest at responding to emails (25% men, vs 19% women).

About the research:

The research was commissioned by Pure360 (digital marketing company), with all research and figures, unless otherwise stated, from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 2076 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 15th and 17th August 2012. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
