The Alternative Limb Project

Who we are

Sophie de Oliveira Barata is an artist and founder of The Alternative Limb project who uses the unique medium of prosthetics to create highly stylised sculptural pieces. Sophie’s creations explore themes of body image, modification, evolution and transhumanism, whilst promoting positive conversations around disability and celebrating body diversity. Working in the prosthetics industry for over fifteen years, Sophie sees the potential of prosthetics as a extension of the wearer’s personality something that is not defined by absence but, rather, transformation

What we do

Merging the latest technology with traditional crafts, Sophie collaborates with various specialists in fields such as CAD 3D modelling, wood and leather craft, electronics, mechanical engineering, robotics, using new technology such as 3d printing, laser cutting, and 3d scanning to create each piece of art.

Who we do it for

Sophie puts the client at the centre of the design process, seeing it more as a collaboration. Working with Prosthetic centres and individuals. Clients have included Paralympic athletes, music performers, models and video game companies.
