FuseBox24: what it is and why we ran it

This is the text of a talk I gave last week at the launch of the FuseBox24 research project at the University of Brighton… FuseBox24 is a new 24 week programme for innovators that uses and integrates a range of concepts from both business (especially lean start-up models) and from the arts. Its aim is to help the participants significantly develop both themselves and their ideas. You can view a short video about the research the University of Brighton undertook into the programme here. The starting point for Wired Sussex’s activity around the creation and development of the FuseBox24 programme …

The FuseBox: A look back at events in the past year

The FuseBox is a studio and collaboration space that we inhabit in central Brighton, which has been open over a year now. In the past year and a half since our launch in Spring 2013, we’ve seen an array of amazing events take place in the space. Here’s a quick run through …

Au’Guest’ Blog Post – Space Encoders: when frogs go digital

Written by CiCi Blumstein, FuseBox artist in residence as part of the Wired Sussex guest blog month           Image credit: CiCi’s FlowerFuse. Portrait © Ollie Gapper Photography 2013. It’s a cold afternoon in December 2012, just before the frost sets in. I open the backyard door and shake out a dusty rug, blinking into the white winter sunlight. At the edge of my vision, I catch an extra sparkle, watery and rhythmic – waves in a deep bucket. A frog. Skinny and golden, a small jewel set in dark blue plastic. I scoop the frog up …

Au’Guest’ Blog post – How the ‘Rose-de Vries Matrix’ (a tool for freelancers) was born!

Written by Jon Norris, Web Editor at Crunch / Freelance Advisor as part of the Wired Sussex guest blog month Jon gives his account of last week’s Wired Sussex Breakfast Workshop, (the third on Being a Successful Freelancer): Last week’s event was the second Freelancer Breakfast I’ve attended, and the first where I’ve had the privilege of being part of the panel. By-and-large I’m a fan of skill-sharing events such as these, but I think for freelancers they’re more important; vital, even. Freelancers need to hone their skills in so many areas (marketing, invoicing, credit control, business development, networking etc. …

ReCreate and The FuseBox – what it means to me!

It’s not often you get to work for an organisation where there’s opportunity to turn the work that you do into something that will really make a difference to the sector as well as the local community. I’m really lucky to be working for Wired Sussex at a time where we’ve managed to win some big projects and to have a hand in helping drive the biggest positive changes for the sector I think Wired Sussex has ever seen. Big projects with EU funding obviously come packaged with a lot of guidelines, deliverables and complex wording, but here’s my take …

Wired Sussex is proud to announce ‘The FuseBox’

Delivering Different Business Thinking for a Disruptive Sector.      We’d like to tell you about a new initiative that we are launching shortly. Wired Sussex is creating a new learning and support centre for start-ups and existing businesses in the creative and tech sector. Called the FuseBox, it will be based in New England House in Brighton. Most business support models are based upon the needs of large companies in stable markets. If you are at the smaller end of the spectrum and operating in a disruptive, digital business environment, then we think that a different set of rules …

Robots and Disguise

Thursday and Friday last week saw the return of the annual New England House Xmas Open Studios and, as there were so many exhibitors this year, Wired Sussex kindly offered up part of their office to a couple us. Pearl Primrose and myself (aka My Little Robot) had the pleasure of setting up in the warm office and enticing people in with minced pies (courtesy of Wired Sussex’s Caroline) and woolly beards. Yes, that’s right, woolly beards! PP’s amazing crochet beards were a hit with the boys and girls alike and one lucky gentleman got away with the last deal …
