It has been apparent for some time that the current skills system is not necessarily providing the right skills, in the right place, to the right people, at the right time or in the right way to meet the needs of digital businesses and the workplace of now and the future. Many research projects and reports have identified a need for change, but we are still asking the same questions that we have asked for many years.
Is there currently an effective system in place to provide businesses with a pipeline of new talent locally? Are schools, colleges, training providers and universities teaching the right skills to keep up to pace with a fast-moving sector? What opportunities are young people getting to gain real and meaningful work experience? Are employees given the right training and support once in work to flourish and develop into tomorrow’s leaders? How do we keep the best talent locally and provide them with the opportunities they crave?
Sussex has been fortunate to have been selected as one of 8 national “trailblazer” regions to undertake an action-based case for change by creating a Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) co-designed with local employers.
The Sussex Chamber of Commerce are now seeking to engage with as many Digital sector employers, freelancers and professionals as possible. We want to gain the views of those working in and leading the Digital sector locally, to make sure your view is heard and that the Plan represents the real view from the ground.
The pandemic has forced us all to rethink our working practices, where and how we work and how we learn. There are opportunities now to do things differently. The Plan will be submitted to Government at the end of March with recommendations for new ways of planning and delivering skills. The recommendations, if accepted, will release funding to develop some innovative pilot programmes which you can help shape now.
We want to hear from you if you want to make your own case for change, want to be heard and have a vision for how the right skills can be delivered for your business. We want to know what skills gaps you see in your business, what issues you may face recruiting the right staff, whether graduates and young people are joining with the right skills if geographic considerations are a barrier and ultimately what you would do differently to overcome the challenges.
The aim is to innovate and disrupt models that may no longer be fit for purpose. To create new ways of thinking about skills and professional development, both in learning environments and the workplace. To create a pathway for systemic change designed to meet current and future skills needs.
You can get involved by simply completing this short online survey linked below. The survey asks if you would be happy to be contacted by one of our team to hear a bit more about your individual business.
