One festival’s mission to boost diversity and inclusion in the digital industry

The largest digital jobs and skills festival in the South East is returning this summer, and it’s on a mission to help digital business in the region become more diverse and inclusive for everyone.

Running from the 18th – 20th June in Brighton, Talent Fest 2019 connects digital, media and technology businesses with talented individuals looking to start or grow their career in the sector.

Now in its third consecutive year, the festival is developed and curated by Brighton-based membership organisation Wired Sussex as part of their ongoing effort to support the growth and sustainability of the digital sector in Sussex.

At the heart of the festival is a theme of diversity and inclusion. With only 11.2% of underrepresented groups working in the UK’s digital sector, recognising that there isn’t always enough support and opportunities for all and addressing it is critical to the future success of the industry.

The festival is supported by many of the city’s digital and tech companies who are all committed to making the Greater Brighton region the best place for anyone to have a fulfilling digital career, including headline sponsors American Express.

Phil Jones, MD of Wired Sussex, said: “Brighton’s creative and digital economy is now worth well over £1 billion to this city each year. To continue to be successful and to grow further still, our ambition must be to make our region the best place in the UK to discover and nurture new talent. But to achieve that goal, we need to recognise that whilst talented people are everywhere, opportunities for them to thrive are not. Making our digital sector more diverse and more inclusive so that everyone has the chance to benefit from its success is central to what Talent Fest 2019 is all about."

Showcasing the best companies and job opportunities from across the region, the first day of the festival, a Jobs Fair, aims to help job seekers learn about different ways into the industry and to meet companies that are recruiting.

The second day, a Portfolio Clinic gives aspiring and professional creatives a rare chance to meet some of Brighton’s top freelancers and agencies and get one-to-one advice on how to create a portfolio or improve an existing one.

Wrapping up the festival is the Skills Summit, a dedicated peer-to-peer business conference where executives, managers and founders join inspiring leaders and thinkers for a conversation on how to attract and support a diverse workforce and create inclusive workplaces for all.
