The 9% Event - Scale Up

Tue 08 Oct 2019
Barclays Eagle Labs, Brighton

About the event

The 10th in a series of smart networking events, the 9% Event aims to inspire and empower women in business in Brighton. Named after the current UK gender pay gap, this exciting evening will combine a new kind of networking with short talks from three inspirational women, who will share their stories of how they got to where they are today; their business stories, pitfalls, peaks, troughs and what it's like to be a woman in each of their industries. On top of this, there will be a complimentary glass of something special from a local drinks producer.

This event focuses on women helming fast-growth businesses in Brighton - how they grew, expanded, scaled up and remained successful, with our city as their home.

The event is open to all women, in any industry, whether you're employed full-time, a freelancer, a start up or a sole trader - there will be something for everyone. Please note that previous events have sold out several weeks in advance.

Previous attendees have said: 'The 9% event - truly inspiring! It was so great to meet so many like-minded, entrepreneurial women in an informal, relaxed setting. I made some great connections and hopefully some friends too. An absolute must-have for your networking diary' and 'the best networking event I've ever attended.'

Hannah Dawson, CEO & Founder of Futrli

Hannah is a serial entrepreneur who has been named as one of the Sunday Times top 100 entrepreneurs to watch. She is the CEO of Futrli, a Brighton-based tech scale up whose product supports 1,100 accountants and over 45,000 small businesses worldwide by allowing them to forecast and financially report accurately. Hannah landed £4m in funding for Futrli, which has seen incredibly fast growth, expanding in just five years to 100 employees across the UK, Australia and New Zealand, with more expansion planned. We are really excited to hear more about how Hannah has helmed such a speedily developing business in our city and how she's coped with their fast rate of growth.

Amy Slade, Managing Director, Pragmatic

Amy is the managing director of the leading specialist WordPress agency in the UK, which is headquartered in the South Lanes. Pragmatic grew from one founder to 50 employees in just a few years, and Amy's career grew with the agency, from joining as operations director to becoming MD four years later. Working with leading brands in the UK and internationally, Pragmatic is a great example of a truly creative Brighton business and we can't wait to hear about Amy's experience leading the team to success.

Melanie Lawson, Founder of Bare Biology

Mum of three and entrepreneur Melanie Lawson became passionate about marine based supplements in 2008 when she suffered from postnatal depression and discovered that Omega 3 helped her symptoms. Melanie struggled to find an Omega 3 in the UK that ticked all the boxes of purity, strength and freshness. She created and launched Bare Biology in 2013, and her first stockist was Liberty, after taking part in their Best of British Open Call. Stockists now also include Whole Foods, Harrods Pharmacy, Victoria Health and Planet Organic. In 2016 she won the NatWest Accelerator ‘Entrepreneur of the Moment’ and ‘Most Accelerated Business Award’, and we are really looking forward to hearing about her journey to success.

The Networking

The 9% Event aims to offer a smarter, more effective way of networking. When you book your ticket, you will receive an email asking for your top three objectives from the networking section of the evening; for example, to meet other people in your industry, to meet other freelancers and to meet potential clients. We will put you into groups, each with a colour code, so that when you arrive, you can locate other women in the same group as you, and instantly start up a conversation that will be useful to you both. We understand that attending networking events alone can be intimidating, but with this system, plus our friendly welcome, we will put you instantly at ease and allow you to make the most out of meeting others.

We hope there will be many useful connections made, and even more friendships!

Please note that there are a limited number of early-bird tickets at a cheaper rate. We expect this event to sell out (last one sold out two weeks prior to the event) so get your tickets as soon as possible!
