Web Dev Meetup: Cloud Native and Automated Testing

Thu 23 Jan 2020
18:30 - 21:00
The Skiff, Brighton

About the event

If you build for the web, whether just for a hobby or professionally, then this meetup is designed for you. We don't have a specific agenda, but we organise monthly events where we chat about all things web.

In our January meetup, we will have two talks:

Distributed HTTP Caching in Cloud Native by Alparslan Avci

Microservice architecture is now a part of any developer’s life as we go deeper into cloud native applications. However, some trade-offs exist in this popular architecture, such as the difficulty of application updates in a service mesh. Some issue raises when adding a caching layer to your existing microservice application ecosystem. Caching becomes a must when you have so many services in your service mesh, but how can we implement a solution without ruining the current implementations?

In this presentation, we will discuss about how we can add distributed HTTP caching to your architecture without updating the existing microservices. Firstly, we will talk about the problem with real life scenarios, and then provide a hands-on resolution by using Hazelcast IMDG which is a popular in-memory data grid. The resolution will be based on sidecar pattern. It will be easy to understand the backend architecture and topology of the solutions with simple live demonstrations during the session.

Alparslan works for Hazelcast as a Software Developer. Alparslan has also worked on several Java projects including a web search engine and enterprise financial anti-fraud solutions. He also contributes to open-source projects like Apache Nutch and currently a PMC member in Apache Gora.

Our second talk will be:

Automating Cypress Testing with Angular and Azure DevOps by Jon Baggaley

Jon will be presenting his work on a project that he did in 2019 where he designed and built a new Automation Testing framework for a suite of Business Critical applications his company were developing. This talk will look at the challenges Jon found in automating test code and will demo some Cypress tools they used to test their Angular SPA.

Jon is a highly experienced Web Developer and Architect with a strong commerical background in Financial Services and Digital organisations. He is a regular tech contributor to conferences in the UK and is also the orgainiser of the Worthing Wormhole, Sussex's very own Comicon!

We will be having beers and pizzas during the half time break as normal.

Doors open at the Skiff at 6:30pm and the event will kick off around 7pim-ish

Hope to see you there!
