About the event

Three Architectural Journeys in Sustainable Design

Ian Mckay explores the work of the architects, BBM Sustainable Design through three interconnected journeys of architectural investigation. Each one searches for meaning and authenticity through linking material sources to place which in turn imbues a sense of belonging. Running through each theme has always been an overarching imperative to create low environmental impact building solutions so each journey is set against the historical backdrop of the accelerating effects of human induced climate change.

Material Brighton

Ben Bosence from Local Works Studio will bring his enthusiasm for vernacular ingenuity and knowledge of material invention. He designs new materials, structures, finishes and processes using site-based materials and referencing vernacular crafts and techniques. Local Works Studio work holistically, led by what they find in the landscape and its communities, to discover solutions to the challenges of life in the built environment in an era of dramatic environmental change.

David Smith of The Flintman Company will share his passion and knowledge in taking ancient materials like flint, lime and other masonry construction materials and crafting surprising contemporary architectural works that have won international fame and an RIBA House of the Year award. David has extensive knowledge of the material hinterland and architectural traditions of the Brighton area and will hope to elucidate some of the fascinating explorations undertaken in the city and beyond in this talk.
