About the event

VIRTUAL: Brighton Immersive Meetup: Immersive for Social Change image

The wellbeing of our attendees and contributors will always be our number one priority. Therefore, we have decided to run this event virtually. Information on how to join our virtual meetup can be found below.

Immersive technology is a powerful storytelling tool that has the capacity to change the way we look at the world around us. At this meetup, we will explore some of the ways creative people, businesses and charities are using virtual and augmented reality to encourage positive social change.

If you are interested in seeing how new technologies can be used for good through education, empathetic experiences or third sector practice, come along to hear from a range of expert speakers behind some of the most thought provoking immersive experiences.

We will be joined by:

Samantha Kingston is the Co-founder & CEO of Virtual Umbrella. She is also the creator of Anonymous.
Premiered at Raindance Film Festival in 2019; Anonymous is a 360 narrative film sharing the personal story of being a child of an alcoholic.  After 28 years, Samantha shares her story of living with an alcohol-dependent parent, hiding the secret and dealing with the death of that parent. The piece highlights a story that 2.5 Million children experience through the UK. The Anonymous.

System Change Hive will join us to talk about The Museum for Hidden Paths, their recent Mixed Reality project.
The Hive collective created a virtual museum as a space of solidarity with creative activists working for better futures. Together a group of artists created a spacious world of colour and poetry designed to share knowledge, protect the new and encourage transformative creativity to keep on growing out into the real world.

Sam Watts will talk about two use cases of #VR4Good that he’s undertaken as part of the outreach programme at Make Real.

  • Google Daydream Impact project with local charity Stay Up Late, looking to provide greater social confidence and awareness with venues for their members with learning disabilities.
  • Putting Blind Veterans UK members into VR to provide insight into how the technology can benefit quality of life improvements.
