"WebAssembly for Web Developers" - Akmal Chaudhri

After last month's success with returning to the Skiff for an in-person event, we will be following up this month with a new talk from Akmal Chaudhri who is kindly coming to Brighton to present for us.

Details:

WebAssembly (Wasm) is a binary instruction format for a stack-based virtual machine. Wasm enables developers to use existing code libraries (e.g. C/C++) as part of their application development process. Wasm is not just for the web and today moves in exciting new directions. One primary use-case would be to run a Machine Learning algorithm directly in a database system on the data already stored in the database system -- an example of co-locating analytics with data.

Attendees will learn how we can use an ML classifier and then port the code to a Wasm module. No prior knowledge or experience of Wasm is required. Wasm standards are being developed by the W3C and actively promoted through non-profit organisations such as the Bytecode Alliance.

Speaker: Akmal Chaudhri

Bio: Akmal helps build global developer communities and raise awareness of technology through presentations and technical writing. He has over 25 years of experience in IT. He has previously held roles as a developer, consultant, product strategist, evangelist, technical writer and technical trainer with several Blue Chip companies and Big Data startups.

Akmal has regularly presented at many international conferences and served on the program committees for several major conferences and workshops. He has published widely and edited or co-edited ten books. He holds a BSc (1st Class Hons.) in Computing and Information Systems, MSc in Business Systems Analysis and Design and a PhD in Computer Science. He is a Member of the British Computer Society (MBCS) and a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).

Doors to the SKiff will open around 6:30pm and the event will start around 7pm as usual.

There will be beers, pizzas and drinks at halftime as well.

We hope to see you there.

Thanks, Gavin
