For this Brown Bag lunch we are delighted to be joined by the esteemed William Latham, one of the first UK artists in the 80’s to create computer art based on genetic algorithms and organic forms, an international pioneer in the field.

Latham in collaboration with mathematician and software developer Lance Putnam will be giving an informal overview of past and current independent and collaborative work and will also be providing a demo of: Mutator VR, a Virtual Reality installation using original software modelled on the processes of evolution.

This event is perfect for anyone interested in the relationship of art + tech and would like to find out more about Evolutionary and Generative Art.

More about the speakers
William Latham is a British computer artist, most known as the creator of the Organic Art product as well as for creating album covers and artwork for the dance group The Shamen. Latham is the founder of the company Computer Artworks which released the Organic Art product through Time Warner Interactive. Latham has authored a book called Evolutionary Art and Computers together with Stephen Todd, published 1992, based on their work at the IBM(UK) Scientific Centre in Winchester.

Lance Putnam is a composer and researcher with interest in generative art, audiovisual synthesis, digital sound synthesis and media signal processing. His work explores questions concerning the relationship between sound and graphics, symmetry in art and science, and motion as a spatiotemporal concept. As a Research Associate in Goldsmiths' Digital Creativity Labs, Lance is currently investigating new approaches to procedural art, working primarily with Professor William Latham and Visiting Professor Stephen Todd.
