.NET South East Meetup

Please arrive between 6:00pm and 6:25pm. Talks will start at 6:30pm. Once the talks are underway we may not be able to guarantee access.

Ian Cooper - The Clean Architecture

What is the clean architecture and how you would build one in .NET? Recently Bob Martin has categorized a set of architectures, including hexagonal architecture, onion architecture and screaming architecture as 'the clean architecture' - a layered architecture of concentric circles with a strong emphasis on separation of concerns. This architecture has become popular because of its amenability to modification as an evolutionary architecture and its support for practices such as TDD.

In this presentation, we will discuss the clean architecture and its benefits. More than that, in the bulk of the presentation, we will show you how to implement a clean architecture in .NET. From first steps to working code, we will show you the moves required to embrace this approach, and introduce you to some of the OSS libraries that can help you get there. All examples will be in .NET Core

BrightonAnalytics Meetup

We will be talking analytics and drinking beer...

A little bit of background. We started meeting in 2012 (see http://www.brightonanalytics.co.uk) and had a brief spell as http://cafeanalytique.com, thinking that we didn't necessarily need beer. And we don't but it is nice to drink a nice beer once in a while (and occasionally talk shop). So we are back - this time using Meetup, which seems to be the way to do this sort of thing these days. Please RSVP to let us know you are coming!

Introduction to Cyber Security Leadership and Governance Workshop

Our first event of 2019!

This workshop is based on our new online GCHQ Certified Training

In the last few years there has been an exponential explosion of technical cyber security solutions. Combine that with recent legislation and regulation updates including GDPR and the NIS Directive, who is actually accountable and responsible for bad technically security procurement purchases and embarrassing high profile data breaches?

Effective governance structures are frequently neglected until a serious issue arises, for example, a data breach, an internal investigation, a formal complaint from a client or a visit from law enforcement. However, good governance is key to implementing and maintaining proportionate and effective cyber security and data protection controls.

Good Governance: Effective leadership is a critical component of good security and accountability.' Source: Cabinet Office's Security Policy Framework

GCHQ Certified Training: The UK Government has identified a significant shortage of skilled cyber security professionals and Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is working with other government departments to address this issue.

"The head of the National Cyber Security Centre has said that a major cyber attack on the United Kingdom is a matter of ‘when, not if’." Source: Ciaran Martin

Whether in our personal lives or at work, cyber security awareness is important for us all. The digital revolution presents huge advantages, but also brings new risks that we need to understand and tackle given our increasing dependence on cyberspace.

B2B and B2C Marketing: What you CAN and can't do under GDPR

This event is aimed at SME's whose main customer base is B2B and are looking for clarification on how GDPR affects their marketing .Last year the emphasis was on how to prepare for the GDPR deadline, but now many months past that deadline, it is time to review what we have learnt. A confusing recurring topic is that B2B marketing under GDPR has different rules to B2C, but what exactly does that mean? This seminar will help you understand what you can do with your data in both markets, and how you can protect it from getting into the wrong hands.

We have invited 2 experts to answer your questions :-

Lisa Downs,
Solicitor and Managing Director, CIPP/E
LJD Law Ltd

Having spent 20 years working in various London law firms, Lisa set up LJD Law Ltd in 2017 so that she could provide a more cost-effective and personal service to businesses than traditional law firms.

Lisa’s practice focuses solely on advising clients on data protection and general commercial matters. Lisa has been advising a wide range of companies on their global GDPR compliance programmes (including drafting internal and external privacy policies, assisting with data subject access requests and advising on data breaches) and regularly speaks on data protection matters. Lisa also has extensive experience of draft, advising on and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements including software licences,.consultancy, application and software development, support/maintenance, professional services contracts, web design and hosting, and distribution/reseller arrangements.

Lisa advises both private and private sector organisations, and has worked in a number of sectors including technology, retail, travel, life sciences, media, financial services, and government.

Delivering Ultrafast (fiber) Broadband - Paul Brewer

Adur & Worthing Councils are working with West Sussex County Council to bring new ultrafast fibre networks to Worthing and Shoreham.

By bringing gigabit full fibre to town as part of a national government funded scheme, our local councils are ushering in a new era of digital connectivity to help our economy grow in the digital age.

In the first wave, council buildings will be connected with brand new fibre lines, and businesses will then be able to access "gigabit vouchers" to help get connected.

Paul Brewer, Director for Digital & Resources at Adur & Worthing will talk about the importance of modern digital infrastructure to the health of our local economies and outline the councils' ambitions to go further to deliver modern digital infrastructure for the benefit of all.

Towards a more digitally confident local third sector

The digital revolution has happened. New digital technology and the internet has changed the way we live our lives and work. The Digital Inclusion Network has brought together over 200 local organisations for the past 2 years, most of which are small charities, supporting them to make this switch to digital in an inclusive way.

What is working to date? Are we evolving enough the way we deliver services to fully support individuals and communities? And what is required to make the sector more digitally confident?

Bringing together third sector leaders, digital agencies, commissioners, frontline staff and local digital champions, this half-day event will explore:

The changed expectations of service users, beneficiaries, trustees, funders, stakeholders, staff and volunteers in a digital world

How to create a culture that maximises digital opportunities to deliver better services in an inclusive way

The next steps needed to make this change happen across the city

Guest speakers include:

Beth Murphy, One Digital Programme Manager, Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO)

Ellie Hale, Digital Fellowship & Communities Lead, Centre for Acceleration of Social Technology (CAST)

Jess Sumner, CEO, Community Works

John Reading, Third Sector Manager, Brighton and Hove City Council

Organisers:
This event is organised by Digital Brighton & Hove in collaboration with Community Works and the Centre for Acceleration of Social Technology (CAST), and generously sponsored by Clearleft.

FREE Workshop with CAST in the afternoon:
Keen to explore more? CAST are offering a free, half-day design hop in the afternoon in collaboration with Tech for Good Brighton. Blockchain - Powering the Future

About a year ago BitCoin blewup - everyone was buying it in the hope of making some money. It was trading at £15,000 a coin and now sits quietly at around £3,000 a coin.

Whilst a lot of people did make money and some made none, what it brought to the attention of the world was the technology that lies behind it.

That technology is Blockchain.

Many tech 'gurus' see Blockchain as a fundamental shift in digital technology and will change the way many things are done in the future. Things such as contracts of ownership, voting, banking and currency transactions. It will encompass the Internet of Things.

In this months talk we are pleased to welcome Ben Martin, Innovation Director at Automation Squared, to unpack Bitcoin technology and explain what it will mean to the future of small businesses.

To get you thinking have a look at this infographic on Blockchain:

Laravel and Lager Meetup

You have multiple accounts on your system and they're all accessing their data. How do you limit all data access to the current user's account? Global scopes, policies and guards, additional where clauses, crossed fingers...?

Using code examples and some walk-throughs, let's see how we each tackle the problem currently, discuss the pros and cons of each approach, and see if we can come to any agreement on the best ones. How does a Laravel approach differ from other frameworks?

If you can bring your laptops then great.

See you there ( hopefully :0 )
