Async: Ask the Brains

After last year's successful Ask the Brains event, we'll be rebooting it for 2019.

Inspired by the monthly Brighton ALT.NET meetup also hosted at the Skiff, we will be asking/talking/ranting about everything web related - 10 minutes per topic. The aim is to create a friendly environment for everyone to ask their "that thing you've never understood but always been too afraid to ask" type questions, plus any other topics you feel like talking about on the night. Topics such as:

Should I use Flow JS or TypeScript for my new app? Why?

I'm new to development. Where do I get started?

I still don't get it! What the hell does 'this' mean in Javascript?

How big do I let a project get before using Redux?

What actually is a database index anyway?

What VS Code plugins can you not live without?

Is it just me, or is React Router 5 rubbish?

Should I write unit tests, integration tests, or both?

The format works best when there is a diverse group of people and opinions in the room, so whether you consider yourself an absolute beginner, or a seasoned pro, do come and join.

So, please put your thinking caps on now and start thinking of some questions you would like to ask, so you can come prepared!

Worthing Digital talks: Using Data as a Creative Material

Your data, with it’s stories and characteristics, contains the features, textures, peaks & troughs of your endeavours and is bound uniquely to you. Using this data as the seed in your creative process, allows you to produce data art, design & visualisation, that has the uniqueness & serendipity of your endeavours embedded within it.

Mike will look at how data, in one form or another, connects all of his projects and how he’s used it in very different ways.

Mike Brondbjerg is a partner at Kultur Design, a creative studio specialising in projects ranging from analytical information design & data visualisations through to data illustration and generative design.

Mike is currently working on data visualisation projects within the Intelligence Unit of London’s City Hall for the GLA / Mayor of London.

Horsham FP Coding Dojo

Greetings, fellow FP enthusiasts.

The goal of the session is to help people learn functional programming through practical exercises. We'll be using Clojure to do this, however, please feel free to bring your own laptops if you'd like to work through the puzzles in your preferred programming language. We hope that more experienced developers will also come along too. A dojo is a great place for new and experienced coders to learn more.

What is Clojure? Clojure is a JVM language that has syntactical similarities to Lisp, full integration with Java and its libraries and focuses on providing a solution to the issue of single machine concurrency.

Its small core makes it surprisingly easy for Java developers to pick up and it provides a powerful set of concurrency strategies and data structures designed to make immutable data easy to work with. It's well worth watching the Rich Hickey's "Clojure for Java Programmers" video or Stuart Halloway's "Radical Simplicity" video.

We look forward to seeing you there.

.NET South East: Writing High-Performance C# and .NET Code

Talk: Turbocharged: Writing High-Performance C# and .NET Code

There are amazing things happening with C# and .NET Core in regards to performance. We have new types such as Span and Memory for working with and parsing in-memory data. We have pipelines for high-performance IO and we have ArrayPool, MemoryPool and OjectPool to help reduce GC allocations. Many more great things are on the horizon in .NET Core 3.0 such as Utf8String and new built-in JSON APIs which add to the performance arsenal. Internally, these have been used by Microsoft teams to optimise .NET Core and ASP.NET Core. Now it's time to apply them to your code!

These features can seem complex, unapproachable and difficult to apply. In this session, Steve will share his journey of learning about and applying these tools when building high-throughput .NET Core worker services. You'll learn about the motivations that led Steve to begin exploring these cool new features and you'll see how they can be applied to production code. This talk is for developers, who like Steve, are ready to begin their journey towards writing faster .NET code, which allocates less.

Speaker: Steve Gordon

Steve Gordon is a Microsoft MVP, Pluralsight author, senior developer and community lead based in Brighton. He works for Madgex developing and supporting their data products built using .NET Core technologies. Steve is passionate about community and all things .NET related, having worked with ASP.NET for over 15 years.

Steve is currently developing cloud native services, using .NET Core, ASP.NET Core and Docker. He enjoys sharing his knowledge through his blog, in videos and by presenting at user groups and conferences. Steve is excited to be a part of the .NET community and founded .NET South East, a .NET Meetup group based in Brighton. He enjoys contributing to and maintaining OSS projects, most actively helping save lives with open source software and the Humanitarian Toolbox (www.htbox.org). You can find Steve online at his blog www.stevejgordon.co.uk and on Twitter as @stevejgordon

Get started experimenting with the capabilities of next-generation CSS and see how they can help us bring new user experiences to life on the web..

Richard Westenra: Painting With Data
@richardwestenra

Data-visualisation trades in metaphor and allusion. At its best, it's imaginative storytelling with data and algorithms. But it can be tough to choose from the overwhelming number of different chart types and tools to use as a canvas (including not least, HTML Canvas).

I'll chart a course through the different options, and explain some of the basics of visualising data on the web.

Jo Franchetti: Perfectionism, Impostor Syndrome and Anxiety - Understanding your fears and learning to be kind to yourself

Perfectionism, anxiety & impostor syndrome affect many people in the tech industry. Learn how to spot harmful thought patterns, how to avoid anxious spirals and be kind to yourself!
