Worthing Digital talks: Using Data as a Creative Material

Your data, with it’s stories and characteristics, contains the features, textures, peaks & troughs of your endeavours and is bound uniquely to you. Using this data as the seed in your creative process, allows you to produce data art, design & visualisation, that has the uniqueness & serendipity of your endeavours embedded within it.

Mike will look at how data, in one form or another, connects all of his projects and how he’s used it in very different ways.

Mike Brondbjerg is a partner at Kultur Design, a creative studio specialising in projects ranging from analytical information design & data visualisations through to data illustration and generative design.

Mike is currently working on data visualisation projects within the Intelligence Unit of London’s City Hall for the GLA / Mayor of London.

Worthing and Beyond: a new network for creatives

Calling all Worthing creatives!

Tom co-ran a frozen yogurt brand in Brighton called Lick, and puts a lot of its success down to the relationship the business had with Brighton and the local creatives.

With his new project 'Worthing & Beyond' - Tom is aiming to build a comprehensive online network of Worthing creatives with the aim of encouraging other businesses to reach out to them and forge similar, mutually beneficial relationships.

His talk on 8th May is all about his journey to this point, and how he sees Worthing & Beyond growing over the next 12 months. He will be asking for ideas and feedback, and hoping the guests enjoy an informal evening with free beer and food.

Sussex Branch: Cyber Resilience: “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Retired"

Speaker: Peter Wood - Race Driver, Musician and Occasional Cyber Consultant

Synopsis: The nature of today’s sophisticated attacks means that organisations must prepare now to deal with severe impacts from cyber threats that cannot always be predicted or prevented. There is no ‘silver bullet’ solution, rather a strategy of cyber resilience is needed to deliver the agility to prevent, detect and respond quickly and effectively, not just to incidents, but also to the consequences of the incidents.”

Speaker Bio: Pete’s career started in 1969 as an electronics engineer, moving into computing and data networks. In 1989 he founded First Base Technologies, one of the UK’s first cyber security firms. He provided security advice and guidance for businesses of all sizes for more than 28 years. He is now mostly retired, focusing on racing his track car, composing electronic dance music, and providing business consultancy services as Barnes Wood Consulting LLP.”

Glug Brighton - The Dogs and Type One

Spring is here, bring on the sunshine!

Following up from our amazing Glug event at Patterns we have another more intimate event now lined up at The Vine Club, the latest in a series of Glug Brighton Meets events.

We will be meeting and hearing the stories from two brilliant creatives. Illustrator, author and dog fancier John Bond and typography expert (nerd) Sarah Hyndman!

SPEAKER - John Bond

John_Bond_Glug

After graduating in Illustration from Kingston University, John worked for 6 years at award-winning creative agency, Kanoti. Where he developed his unique visual style and his creative voice. in 2014 he decided to step out alone with his illustration work and he has never looked back!

His work is playful and brimming over with ideas and visual puns, many of his works have featured our beloved canine friends in all kinds of scenarios, but rest assured other animals do feature!

In 2018 he published his first children book – Mini Rabbit Not Lost. The first of three books commissioned by Harper Collins. He has also worked with the Mr Men and Little Miss archive on a card and stationary range in collab with Ohh Deer.

Clients include the BBC, Channel 4, Disney, HarperCollins, Mr Men/Little Miss, MTV, Ohh Deer, Starbucks and Tate.

Website iamjohnbond.com

SPEAKER - Sarah Hyndman

Sarah_hyndman_glug

Sarah Hyndman creates events, workshops and talks that give audiences an entertaining look at human behaviour; the idiosyncrasies of how the brain makes decisions, or the first impressions we form that alter what we taste or smell.

She shows that a font is not a font — it’s an idea, a smell, a song, a memory, a personality, a warning, a taste, a seduction… When we read, we generally look past the type to focus on the experience it describes, unaware of the assumptions that we make that alter those experiences. Sarah shows that typography is cultural coding, which she’s been researching and quantifying for the last few years.

Join us for talks, visual delights & conversation plus lots of "not working” opportunities with like minded creatives.

There are only 80 tickets available for this event so grab a ticket soon.

codebar Brighton Talks

Leave your laptops at home and join us for the second edition of codebar Talks.

A free, friendly evening of talks to inspire, motivate and encourage conversation.

Talks:

Oliver Turner: When Houdini met Goldblum
@oliverturner

What is Houdini? Why can’t we declaratively animate linear gradients? …and what does either of these things have to do with Jeff Goldblum?

Get started experimenting with the capabilities of next-generation CSS and see how they can help us bring new user experiences to life on the web..

Richard Westenra: Painting With Data
@richardwestenra

Data-visualisation trades in metaphor and allusion. At its best, it's imaginative storytelling with data and algorithms. But it can be tough to choose from the overwhelming number of different chart types and tools to use as a canvas (including not least, HTML Canvas).

I'll chart a course through the different options, and explain some of the basics of visualising data on the web.

Jo Franchetti: Perfectionism, Impostor Syndrome and Anxiety - Understanding your fears and learning to be kind to yourself
@ThisIsJoFrank

Ever felt like everyone knows more than you? Spent hours procrastinating rather than starting or finishing a project?

Perfectionism, anxiety & impostor syndrome affect many people in the tech industry. Learn how to spot harmful thought patterns, how to avoid anxious spirals and be kind to yourself!

Sausage rolls from The croque shop and drinks will be provided. There will be vegan and veggie options

Friendly SEO: An Introduction to getting found in search

Come and have a pint and learn about SEO.

Everyday I'm talking with small businesses and freelancers who are scared of SEO and feel stupid asking questions.

This is the event to quash the notion that it's too complex or difficult for you to understand. I'm here to make SEO friendly and less scary.

I'll run through some basic concepts, explain why you don't always have to be top and answer your questions in a relaxed and friendly environment.

17:30 - 18:00: Arrival
18:00 - 18:45 Talk
18:45 Onwards - Questions / Drinking / Networking
I'll be setting up from around 17:00 so feel free to pop by and say hello earlier if you're at a loose end.

Where?

We're upstairs in the second room on the right at the lovely craft beer company.

Buy a pint on the way up!

Who is this talk for?

This talk is an introduction to all things SEO and is designed for anyone to turn up who wants to learn the basic concepts of what it is, and what it all means.

If you're one of the below, here's the questions I aim to answer :

Freelancers - What SEO can you do yourself? When should you outsource? Should you even bother?
Business Owners - Work with agencies but feeling lost? Unsure what you can do yourself? Understand the basic terms so that you aren't lost in meetings and understand the opportunities to grow
Entrepreneurs - Find opportunities and get a basic grasp of where to go to learn more information.
What will you learn?

What is SEO?
What does being first really mean?
Why should you "do" SEO?
What are keywords?
Who on earth am I?

I work with small businesses and freelancers to help them understand SEO and get the most out of it at the lowest cost.

I've always worked in house for small companies and there's always been a fear about search and Google which I now aim to remove so companies can grow and see how much opportunity there is for them.

Frustrated with all resources being focused on big companies with money to burn, I'm dedicated to helping smaller companies and individuals use SEO to their advantage and grow.

SEO Shouldn't be scary!
