Breakfast Session: How to Manage the Feast and Famine of Freelancing

Wired Sussex Breakfast Session: How to Manage the Feast and Famine of Freelancing

The Wired Sussex Breakfast Sessions share best practice on subjects ranging from marketing and branding to intellectual property and investment opportunities. And there’s coffee and croissants too. What’s not to like?

Are you a freelancer with questions on how you can best utilise your time during quieter periods? Have you struggled when all of your clients are relying on you to deliver work at the same time? Wondering how to handle your finances throughout the year without a steady paycheck?

At this Breakfast Session, we'll look at how you can best manage your time and workload when certain months of the year inevitably get quieter, and busier. From budgeting advice so you can always pay your bills, to how you can use quieter periods to work on your personal brand and marketing (and how to keep this going when you’re busy), and discussing the importance of building a close support network who you can rely on.

Helping to lead the session will be experienced freelance peers within the community, including:

Paul Silver - Paul is a highly experienced freelance web developer, having worked in building websites since 1996. He’s also the organiser of Brighton Farm, a weekly meetup group for digital freelancers in the local area.

Hayley Maisey - Hayley has over 10 years’ experience creating and implementing effective marketing and communication strategies and campaigns for organisations across educational, private and charitable sectors. Since 2017, she’s been working as a freelance marketing consultant specialising in the learning technologies sector.

Luke Thomas - Luke is the Business Services Director at chartered accountancy firm Plus Accounting. Here he specialises in providing advice and planning for a comprehensive range of accounting & tax services specifically for the digital sector.

The session will then be followed by an informal discussion where you can discuss any freelance related questions you may have, and a chance for networking.

So, whether you’re new to freelancing or are more experienced and looking for some fresh ideas, this event will be a great opportunity to connect with other freelancers in the Wired Sussex community and provide you with some inspiration on how to manage your business.

Artificial Intelligence: Service or Master?

A guided tour into the opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence.

About this Event

Dr. Frederique Bone and Dr. Simone Vannuccini, researchers at the Science Policy Research Unit of the University of Sussex, will offer a ‘guided tour’ into the opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence.

Will AI take your job, decide your credit scores and predict your next online purchase? Or will it detect a potential disease before a doctor can and help discover new materials and combinations of ideas we might not even imagine?

We will also discuss the moral questions and legal issues that the machine and the algorithm age raises, and what our role is as individuals in this rapidly changing world.

Solace Exhibition

Solace is an interactive sound and video installation inspired by The Sussex Downs. It has been designed to get local families involved in more experimental art. Happening over the summer 2019 to spring 2020, it will invite audiences to ask questions about our relationship to open and urban space, wellbeing and digital authenticity.

The work will be created by artists Karen Tilley and Kevin Grist, and inspired by digital content captured by local people. The project includes several strands:

  • Nature recording workshops - families go into natural settings in Seaford, Ditchling and Eastbourne on the hunt for interesting sounds and videos, using digital software to record and manipulate.
  • Record your garden - local people are encouraged to record sounds and video from their own garden, and submit to us digitally.
  • Solace exhibitions - the installation will tour 3 public galleries, responding differently to each space interactively.
  • Artist talks - the artists and supporting technicians will hold a series of talks and CPD sessions, to share learning about interactive design and engaging people with experimental art.

"I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords" with Andy Budd.

Wired Sussex Members' Event: "I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords" with Andy Budd.

This talk takes you through 2,000 years of robot evolution, from the mechanical statue of Cleopatra in Alexandria, to the latest lab experiments.

During this journey, we'll touch on issues of technology, morality and the socio-economic effects of a world dominated by robots.

As a UX design and service designer, Andy looks at how robots will be increasingly used to deliver service experiences, and what designers need to do in order to create the perfect human-robot interaction.

More about Andy:

Andy was one of the first pioneers of web standards and his blog and best-selling book, CSS Mastery: Web Standards Solutions, helped set the tone for progressive web-design in the UK. As well as being one of the founders of UX agency, Clearleft, he organises UX London each year, and founded Leading Design in 2016.
