Skills, Talent and Diversity

A collective commitment that supports our goal of making our region the best place in the UK for anyone to build a fulfilling digital career.

What is this?

Wired Sussex Talent Manifesto was devised with participants at our 2018 Skills Summit event.

This manifesto offers a collective commitment that businesses can sign up to, to support the aspiration to make Greater Brighton the best place in the UK to work in the digital sector, for everyone.

It pulls together our core shared beliefs: that people are our greatest asset, that we must build diverse and inclusive teams, and that education and skills development are essential for this to succeed.

Here are the specific commitments in the Wired Sussex Talent Manifesto:

Signing up, your company makes a clear, powerful statement of support and provides momentum to this shared commitment. You’re demonstrating to your team, your stakeholders and your clients that you commit to a workforce community from as broad a range of backgrounds as possible. That you take inclusivity seriously.

What has happened so far?

At the 2018 Skills Summit our members gathered and collaborated. Together we defined and clarified our shared aspirations for the sector in our region. Out of this gathering came the Talent Manifesto, which works as a pledge towards achieving those goals.

Alongside this, we developed a Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit to give practical support and resources to those companies looking to improve their diversity and demonstrate their support for these aspirations.

This page is a hub for practical advice and resources. Many fantastic organisations, groups and individuals have already joined us, to celebrate, champion and support diversity in our region's creative, digital and tech sector.

It can be daunting perhaps, especially if your company grew organically or started small, perhaps your team all seems to look the same, or come from the same kind of background. But every journey starts somewhere – and the commitment itself is a strong beginning.

What is planned for the future?

The more signatures we have, the more weight the Talent Manifesto will carry and the better engaged our sector will become. We believe this can become a powerful regional 'kite mark’ of companies’ commitment to these values.

The Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit is a living document: we continue to consult with our members, to find out more about both the challenges they face, attracting, training and retaining diverse teams, and also the innovative solutions they are using to address these challenges.

These too can be fed into the Talent Manifesto to ensure that it is current, evolving and responding to all of our shared needs.
