Site Reliability Engineer

In this role, you’ll be supporting cross functional product teams by maintaining the optimum performance of our Crunch system infrastructure; whilst continually making enhancements to our Crunch Strategic Platform.

We’re looking for someone who makes complex change management look simple, will be our first port of call in an emergency response and who can continually deliver reliable and tested services before they go into production.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, our team has been working from home and thriving in this new way of working - as a company, we will be embracing this in the longer term and are pleased to open this vacancy to applicants from anywhere in the UK. All we need is for you to be able to work from home in a comfortable, private and distraction free environment - with a solid internet connection (a minimum of 10-12 Mbps upload speed). We'll provide you with all the equipment you need to get set up before you start with us, delivered to your door -  so there's no need to supply your own. Ideally, the successful applicant will be happy to support the team with working hours between 09:30 - 18:00 (Monday - Friday).

In the role, you will be:

  • Shaping and developing the Crunch Strategic Platform, working closely with technical experts where required.

  • Developing and maintaining a reliable platform for continuous deployment, as well as other internal IT systems required to support our day to day operational activities.

  • Using your advanced troubleshooting skills to research and resolve more complex issues that have been escalated.

  • Developing, maintaining and evaluating existing infrastructure.

  • Working on a number of transformational projects within our Engineering department, for example - enabling better routing between our microservices or enabling A/B testing, green/blue deployment in our Kubernetes cluster with Istio.

  • Supporting the development and implementation of the Crunch Business Continuity Plan.

  • Proactively maintaining your personal development, particularly in areas related to network and security best practices.

Please note that this role will require some out of hours in exceptional circumstances - such as pre-planned infrastructure maintenance, or when an unforeseen issue arises which have the potential to cause significant disruption to the business.

The essentials:

  • Mid level development experience in any of the following programming languages: Python, GoLang,  Java, or JS

  • Cloud services experience (AWS services such as EC2, S3 and RDS)

  • Knowledge of container management and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes

  • Hands-on operational experience in performance troubleshooting

The ‘nice to have’:

  • esting framework usage in a CI/CD environment.

  • An understanding of service-oriented architectures, particularly micro services.

  • Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, ELK and Zipkin.

  • A degree or other recognised qualification in an IT or Software Development related discipline.

What you’ll get in return:

We’re very proud of our collaborative and inclusive working environment - you’ll be working as part of a dynamic and vibrant team, with a whole host of fantastic company benefits! These include:

  • 33 days holiday a year (including bank holidays), which increases with length of service - plus an extra half day holiday on your birthday!
  • Private Medical Insurance, Life Assurance, and a pension plan with employer contributions
  • Company funded social events (when we can all meet again!)
  • Lots of wellbeing events across the year; including in-house personal training sessions, yoga sessions and more!

Crunch is committed to equal opportunities in every aspect of our company and the community, embracing and promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for our team members, those who apply to work for us and our client base, without exception.

We believe that the key to our success is our people, we value the contributions and experiences of all who make up our community. Supported by our company policies and procedures, we will take every possible step to ensure that no person will suffer direct or indirect discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, family or parental status, national origin, age, neurodiversity or disability status.
