Surface Impression is a specialist digital media development agency that works for cultural sector, public sector and nonprofit clients. We work for national and international museums, galleries, arts producers, theatres, charities, associations, municipalities and other nonprofits in the UK, North America and the rest of Europe. We have offices in Brighton, UK and Toronto, Canada. 

Our Brighton office is recruiting for a developer to help us deliver high quality, user-friendly, accessible and sustainable websites, web apps and other interactive projects for our amazing clients, helping them to connect with their audiences and deliver their goals.

We are passionate about the sectors we work in and supporting the organisations we work with. We have a great team with many years of digital, design, accessibility and client service experience but our goal is unified in supporting and working with organisations we love and striving to ensure that everyone has access to the best digital media.

 

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced developer who can hit the ground running. You will be working on a wide variety of new website projects as well as the continual development of sites in our Support Programme.

We work in a fast paced environment working on many varied and interesting projects simultaneously so the role requires experience in managing workload and prioritising tasks to optimise outcomes. A collaborative approach to work and problem solving is essential. 

We are looking for someone to bring their knowledge and experience to the role, who can teach us some new skills and who will enjoy collaborating with our colleagues both in the UK and Internationally on a wide range of projects.

Essential skills and experience 

  • 4+ years industry experience working freelance or from an agency background. 

  • Custom Wordpress development

  • PHP

  • MySQL

  • HTML / CSS / Javascript 

  • API integration

  • Git / Continuous Integration

  • A high degree of adaptability and the ability to take the initiative

 

Advantageous skills and experience 

  • Drupal

  • Mobile apps 

  • Server configuration / administration

  • ElasticSearch

  • Data analytics

  • Understanding of/interest in sustainable development

  • Implementation of AAA accessibility

  • Hours: Minimum 22.5 per week

Location

This role can be taken remotely or working in our Brighton office which is based between Brighton station and the Lanes. We share one office with access to a large co-working space and a wonderful rooftop bar with views of the sea. For local commuters there is bike storage, showers and changing facilities.
