Head of Front-end Development - Clearleft Ltd

Brighton and Hove

Closing date: 07/08/2019

Clearleft are a mix of design thinkers, inventors, creative technologists and digital champions. All of the team are client-facing who love helping our partners achieve their business goals.

Job Description:

We’re looking for an experienced front-end developer to lead our growing team of developers here in Brighton.

If you’re from a group that is under-represented in tech, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

You should have a solid understanding—and years of experience in—the building blocks of the web: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We also expect you to have an appreciation for accessibility, performance, and progressive enhancement. You should be keen to try new technologies and assess them for suitability in helping our clients make responsible technology decisions. If you have plenty of experience working with frameworks, libraries, and build tools, you’ll be all set.

This rewarding and fulfilling role will comprise three complementary aspects: business support, technical leadership, and professional development.

Skills Range:

Business Support
You will set the technical direction of Clearleft, under the guidance of its founders, Richard, Andy, and Jeremy. This is the big picture stuff: identifying trends and changes in the market and planning appropriate responses.

You’ll help us win work by demonstrating your technical expertise. You’ll help shape our responses to potential clients. You’ll be able to spot gaps and identify any incorrect assumptions in the briefs we receive. By understanding what clients really need—which might sometimes be different to what they’ve requested—you’ll propose alternatives that solve the real problems. You’ll come along to pitches and reassure potential clients that Clearleft are the right choice of partner when it comes to front-end development.

Once the work has been won, you’ll decide who’s best placed on your team to deliver the best results. You’ll work together with a project manager throughout the project to make any course corrections to resource and time allocations.

Technical Leadership
As head of front-end development, you will be responsible for creating the initial technical architecture for projects. That means you’ll need to validate any technical requirements and identify any risks and assumptions. Your experience will ensure that projects are accurately scoped and estimated.

At Clearleft, we aren’t tied to any particular technology stack. While we might have our own personal preferences within the company, we’ll always choose whatever makes most sense for a particular client and their team’s needs. You will oversee these choices of technologies, tools, and techniques.

While others on your team will deliver the bulk of the code, you’ll be there to make sure the code is up to scratch. That can be through code reviews, daily standups, or any other methods you choose. Sometimes you’ll need to roll your sleeves up and deliver some code too, particularly at the beginning of projects, when you’re setting the initial direction.

Professional Development
While technology decisions are important, it’s people that really matter. You’ll be leading a small but growing team of talented developers. You will inspire them and motivate them.

You’ll be responsible for continually supporting and assessing the professional development of your team and you’ll make sure that new team members have the tools, support, training, and guidance they need to thrive.

So, as you can see, this role will be quite varied. Within the course of one day, you might go from thinking about thorny code problems to helping someone on your team with their career plans to figuring out how to land new business in a previously uncharted area of technology. If that sounds like a good day’s work to you, we’d love to hear from you!
