iOS Developer - Ocasta

Brighton and Hove

Closing date: 06/08/2018

Hello! We're Ocasta - a friendly team who create things for apps, web and everything in-between. We work towards building simple solutions to complex problems across Android, iOS, server and the web.

Job Description:

At Ocasta you'll be working on the iPhone and iPad apps we build for ourselves and our customers. We have a mix of product and project work, from short three week prototyping projects to multi-year business critical tools used by our customers - including award winning till systems, eLearning games and digital comics. Working together you'll have the chance to influence the projects we work on and technologies we use.

You can be involved in all parts of the process; product inception, UX, design, development across multiple technologies, alongside helping out with the launch and marketing. For example; David chooses to spend his time between Android and server development, Megan is learning HTML/CSS alongside the smooth running of her projects, and Greg, whilst waiting for Xcode to compile, reads over newsletters and blog posts before Hayley sends them out. We'll work with you to shape a role that suits your interests.

Skills Range:

We don't have a long list of technical requirements, we are simply looking for someone who is able to understand complicated problems and solve them with simple straightforward solutions.

If you can write good Swift and are able to learn quickly then we're confident you'll pick up (and help us improve) how we do things. Any experience with Jenkins or Fastlane is a benefit but not a requirement.

There are no strict educational qualifications required - we'd just like to see what you've done that demonstrates your ability and eagerness.

We're open to hearing from an applicant with years of experience to eager recent graduates! Unfortunately as a small company we are not in a position to help with visa or work permit applications so we cannot consider non-EU applicants at this time.

Person Specification:

You'll be responsible for:

  • Writing Swift (obviously!)
  • Keeping an eye on current mobile technology trends and highlight opportunities
  • Helping keep the build system running and up to date (we use Jenkins)
  • Setting up automated tests
  • Designing how our projects should be structured
  • Help decide on the best technologies and approach for projects and get to use them
  • Continue to learn and improve
  • Work with the design team to keep our apps using the latest human interface guidelines
  • Support and bug fixes in existing projects
  • Working with the server team
  • Sharing thoughts on designs and concepts
  • Do code reviews - helping you and other team members write better code
  • Giving feedback in stand ups
  • Improving our process in retrospectives
  • Estimating tasks and user stories
  • Be involved in deployments
  • Demo the projects you've worked on to the team

To support your progression we'll sit down for structured monthly one-to-ones with agreeable actions for both of us. Everyone has a personal improvement budget for conferences, books and learning.

To allow for a better work-life balance we offer flexible hours, including leaving at 13:00 on a Friday after completing 35 hours through the week. For personal wellbeing we offer private healthcare and mental health support. We are a flat organization; everyone's opinions are heard and shape the direction of the company. We have a weekly fika where the whole team can sit down and chat about anything (with vegan cake). To help burn off that cake we're in the cycle to work scheme and get 50% off gym membership at Pure Gym.

We offer twice yearly bonuses based on Ocasta's performance as a team. To plan for your future - pensions are matched up to 3%. If you're thinking about expanding your family we have enhanced maternity, paternity & adoption pay, or Pawternity if you want to re-home a rescue animal 🐶. We'll provide you with a competitive salary based on your experience.

We recognise the diversity problem in the digital industry and support local schemes like Codebar, Spring Forward and BDMA work placements. You'll join us in promoting change in underrepresented minorities in technology and encouraged to give suggestions and improvements in how we can help.

I encourage anyone applying to read some of the Five minutes with... series of posts we have talking to the Ocastars about why they enjoy working here and their interests!

Just so you know - we have a collaborative hiring process, so other members of our team will be able to see your application. You can request a data correction or to be deleted from our database at any time. Otherwise After 365 days we'll automatically remove you from our system.

Thank you,

p.s. we've got good coffee (and some tea).
