Founded in 1999, Gamer Network publishes a range of video games websites including Eurogamer.net, the world's leading independent video games website with local editions in ten European languages, and USGamer, our USA flagship multi-format games brand.

The company publishes market-leading trade resource GamesIndustry.biz, renowned PC gaming site Rock, Paper, Shotgun, games news site VG247 and popular YouTube channels such as Outside Xbox and Digital Foundry.

In addition to its online publications, Gamer Network produces live public events and trade shows including EGX, the UK's largest gaming event, and its sister event EGX Rezzed.

Job Description:

Gamer Network is looking for a Junior Linux System Administrator to join the infrastructure team within our growing Tech department.

This core team keep Gamer Network's wide family of sites and related systems up and running. This involves managing systems across multiple hosting providers and at huge scale where rock solid uptime and reliability are critical.

We also work internally with our Product and Platform teams to provide tools for testing and rapid deployment, as those team develop new projects and constant interations across our network.

From time to time, the team also take a lead role with providing desktop support in the office, covering all the usual Windows and OSX systems.

Away from these core missions, the team also support our event and content teams onsite at major videogames shows such as EGX and EGX Rezzed. This can be a varied and challenging technical environment, making contributions that range from setting up networking for many exhibitors, to ensuring smooth delivery of our streaming tech for Twitch and YouTube.

 
Skills Range:

Required Skills and Experience:

  • You must have had some demonstrable exposure to Linux administration with any distro, and be focused on that as your future career path.
  • It is essential that you are comfortable on the command line.
  • Scripting / programming in bash or python.
  • TCP/IP networking and familiarity with common protocols such as HTTP and DNS.
  • Some experience of helpdesk and desktop support, with a genuine desire to solve everyday problems for your colleagues.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Configuration management and orchestration.
  • Containers and other types of virtualisation.
  • AWS and other cloud providers.
  • Network and systems security including firewalls and VPNs.
  • A degree in a technical or relevant subject is desireable but not essential.
