Lead Android Developer - Ocasta

Brighton and Hove

Closing date: 10/12/2018

Hello! We're Ocasta - a friendly team who create things for apps, web and everything in-between. We work towards building simple solutions to complex problems across Android, iOS, server and the web.

Job Description:

Your role as the Lead Android developer at Ocasta would be to ensure our Android apps are great. We build apps for ourselves and our customers having a mix of product and project work, from short three week prototyping projects to multi-year business critical tools used by our customers - including till systems, eLearning games and our own Oplift product suite. Working with us you'll have the chance to influence the projects we work on and technologies we use.

You will be involved in all parts of the development process; product inception, design and development.

We'll happily train and help you learn in those areas where you'd like to improve

  • Writing Kotlin (obviously!)
  • Helping deliver the best in Android UI design
  • Keeping an eye on current mobile technology trends and highlight opportunities
  • Helping keep the build system running and up to date (we use Jenkins)
  • Setting up automated tests
  • Designing how our projects should be structured
  • Helping decide on the best libraries and approach for projects and using them
  • Continuing to learn and improve
  • Working with the design team to ensure our apps look great and are easy to use
  • Supporting and bug fixing existing projects
  • Working with the server team on API design
  • Sharing thoughts on designs and concepts
  • Doing code reviews - helping you and other team members write better code
  • Giving feedback in stand ups
  • Improving our process in retrospectives
  • Estimating tasks and user stories
  • Demoing the projects you've worked on to the other teams

If these sound like the sort of activities you'd like to be working with everyday then get in touch!

To support your progression we'll sit down for structured monthly one-to-ones with agreeable actions for both of us. Everyone has a personal improvement budget for conferences, books and learning.

To allow for a better work-life balance we offer flexible hours, including leaving at 13:00 on a Friday after completing 35 hours through the week. For personal wellbeing we offer private healthcare and mental health support. We are a flat organization; everyone's opinions are heard and shape the direction of the company. We have a weekly fika where the whole team can sit down and chat about anything (with vegan cake). To help burn off that cake we're in the cycle to work scheme and get 50% off gym membership at Pure Gym.

We offer twice yearly bonuses based on Ocasta's performance as a team. To plan for your future - pensions are matched up to 3%. If you're thinking about expanding your family we have enhanced maternity, paternity & adoption pay, or Pawternity if you want to re-home a rescue animal 🐶. We'll provide you with a competitive salary based on your experience.

We recognise the diversity problem in the digital industry and support local schemes like CodebarSpring Forward and BDMA work placements. You'll join us in promoting change in underrepresented minorities in technology and encouraged to give suggestions and improvements in how we can help.

I encourage anyone applying to read some of the Five minutes with... series of posts we have talking to the Ocastars about why they enjoy working here and their interests!

Thank you,

p.s. we've got good coffee (and some tea).

Skills Range:

We're looking for applicants with at least a couple of years full time experience. Salary will be in the range £38,000 - £50,000 depending on your knowledge and skills.

Unfortunately as a small company we are not in a position to help with visa or work permit applications so we cannot consider non-EU applicants at this time.
