We have a great opportunity for a talented and experienced Linux engineer to head up our DevOps. You’ll be in charge of maintaining and designing our cloud infrastructure on Rackspace and AWS, and ensuring that we are using the best technologies in the best way to deliver industry leading availability and speed across the world.


We have some automation of server builds and deployment in place - but it’s a great opportunity to put new software and processes in place to ensure that we are ready for the growth that we know is coming.

Skills Range:

You will:

  • Have an exceptional track record of working with Linux to support growth at fast scaling companies/startups.
  • Have been the person ultimately responsible for the ‘Uptime’ metric of the virtual server infrastructure for a Saas (software as a service) product
  • In-depth experience with AWS and Rackspace clouds.
  • Be a best practice guru - with a real passion for standards, and documentation.
  • You should have experience of working with deployment technologies such as Chef, Jenkins, or Puppet, BUT - you should know what is going on under the hood - you will be a Bash wizard.
  • You will have installed VPNs, Cloud Firewalls, IDS, Hard Drive Encryption, and be able to bore us silly talking about server hardening techniques.
  • Ideally you will have experience working in partnership with fast paced and ambitious development teams looking to ship secure code, fast with CI tools like Jenkins.
  • Our team work with PHP, React, Apache, Nginx, Redis, Percona, Cassandra.
  • Have experience working with very large databases - you’ll have implemented and maintained sharding and Master/Slave replication.
  • Have experience working in international businesses, and have a deep understanding of DNS and different forms of caching to deliver consistently high speeds worldwide.
  • Have the passion and thoroughness for creating error free, maintainable systems.
  • Be a self starter - self motivated and driven - you’ll push us forward and bring your ideas and excitement to the team.
 
Person Specification:

What will the work be like?

You will:

  • Be responsible for App uptime, and report the statistics to the board
  • Configure and maintain development, testing, staging and production environments
  • In collaboration improve automation of deployment, monitoring and related processes
  • Work with the Chief Product Officer, the development team, and our GDPR auditors to refine tools, standards and procedures relating to information security and data protection
  • Own and manage backup/restore procedures, disaster recovery plan and technical risks register
  • Conduct periodic disaster recovery rehearsals
  • Identify opportunities to improve scalability and resilience, and work proactively with the dev team to see them become reality
  • Schedule and keep track of external pen testing and similar technical audits
  • Anticipate traffic and ensure that we are ready for growth (we more than triple each year)
  • Work with the sales team to ensure that the Security information they need to close deals is ready to go, and work with the Head of Sales to identify improvements that would unblock sales.
  • Be responsible for the out-of-hours server outage rota, and be on call for a proportion of the week. Of course though - the servers will be so well set up that this will never be an issue ;).

  • You get to work from wherever you are most effective. Our team members get to choose the best location for them but we'll need you to be based in the UK within 2 hours travelling distance from our head office in Brighton, East Sussex (so we can work there at least once a week)

  • We work around childcare commitments - so whatever times of day are best for you
  • We are on Slack constantly, so you will always see, and chat with your team - so you’ll never get lonely
  • You’ll work directly with the Chief Product Officer (a company Director) so will have real influence on how we proceed
  • You’ll work at least one day a week at HQ in Brighton, East Sussex, to plan and go over the week’s work…
