Here at Cardens Accountants, we like to think we’re a little different to most accountants. Of course, as with any reputable firm you can trust us to handle your accounting and tax matters knowledgeably and accurately. And we make a real effort to do them quickly as well.

We also know the accounts are a foreign language to many people. We understand that we must use plain English, not accountantspeak, and communicate how you want, when you want. We understand that you need us to, well, just get on with things, not wait for you to tell us.

In short, we understand that we must work hard on your accounts so you don't have to. After the success of Cardens throwing open our doors for last year's Open Studios week - every session sold out - we are back bigger and better this year. Each day we are running a different topic that we think you will find useful.

There are one to one sessions with our team of qualified accountants during the day if you want to discuss your own circumstances in private.

This year we will be also running lunch time group sessions and have managed to secure some great speakers

Day 1 - Stress-free record keeping? How about Zero Stress!

Bookkeeping is a pain but it has to be done. It stops you from running your business and it keeps you from your family and friends. What if however, it could be easier? We are pleased to have Xero (pronounced "zero" - a leading cloud based accounting package) come in to give you a personal introduction to their software.

If that wasn't enough we have two guest speakers;

  • Receipt Bank an automated system for inputting your purchase invoices which works seamlessly with Xero
  • E-advantage Solutions a local business who has a great gamified Customer relationship management (CRM) that you must see.

Day 2 - More great options for stress-free record keeping with our friends from FreeAgent -

Variety is the spice of life and we understand that one package does not fit all. Therefore, we are very proud to present Freeagent as an alternative cloud based accounting software. We will also tell you how this integrates with Receipt Bank as well as numerous other software add-ons to make your life easier.

Please come along to hear how Freeagent can change your world.

Day 3 - How using a Limited Company can save you money

Is your net profit more than £30,000 per year? Are you a sole trader or in a partnership?

We could reduce your tax bill by using a limited company - sounds good right? Well come and join us to find out how.

Day 4 - How to win at the VAT game

Registered for VAT or nearing the £79,000 registration threshold? It isn't all bad news; you could be a VAT winner.

Let us help you take the pain out of being vat registered by telling you about the various schemes available to you to make your life easier and more profitable!

Day 5 - Making a claim for Research & Development tax credits in the digital world

Are you in the development game, always pushing the boundaries of what is possible? The tax system can work for you!

Come see Keith Hall FCA for information on possible tax credits you might be missing out on.

BrightMinded is a Brighton-based software development company founded in March 2011. We develop web-based and mobile solutions ranging from simple WordPress sites to advanced optimisation algorithms.

As part of the CDIT Open Studios week this year we are opening our doors to anyone interested in finding out how digital companies do it! In fact, being located at The Dock we are one among a whole ecosystem of small and exciting start-ups. That is why we have decided to open the doors of The Dock and organise two days of events, where you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with some of Brighton's brightest! All the events are free and you may attend one, two or all of them if you want. Come and see us then!

Day 1

BrightMinded - Business Start Up For Little or No Money, 10.30am - 12.00pm

Starting a new business can seem a daunting task but it needn't be an expensive one. In this talk BrightMinded will share their experience of many of the online technologies available to smooth and simplify the process. From setting up email and creating a web page to global collaboration there are many great tools available which allow you to focus on the day to day business rather than establishing infrastructure. We'll also explore how Brighton's innovative business spaces like The Dock can accelerate and support those first few steps...

Amplee - - Social Media for Start Ups 1.00pm - 2.00pm

Join Mary-Ann Johnn, online marketer, at the Dock in Hove to hear her useful advice on using social media as a cost-effective means of marketing your business.

If you're a start-up, small business or student, feel free to come along to find out more about using social media to create awareness and new business.

This one hour session will aim to cover the following;

  • Why social media for your small business?
  • Working out which social media platforms to use
  • Setting up your business presence on social media
  • Using social media platforms to drive traffic to your new website
  • Using Twitter & LinkedIn for new customer acquisition
  • Managing your social media platforms with ease

BrightMinded - Open Source Web Frameworks: Web Development with Kohana, 2.30 - 3.30pm

If you are like us you will look for that piece of technology that is best suited for the project at hand. As a webapp developer this means that you probably get to play with a lot of different frameworks each emphasizing a certain approach and playing on the strengths of the underlying language. For our last project we have used the open-source, PHP-based, object-oriented framework called Kohana and in this talk we'd like to introduce it and discuss what we've learned.

This is for anyone who has been using a different PHP framework, or for those of you who are thinking of switching to PHP webapp dev and don't know where to start or if you just want to geek out for an hour! You don't have to but if you are the hands-on type of person feel free to bring your laptop with an *AMP stack ready to go so you can try things yourself!

Day 2

Jido Control - 3D design & printing workshop with Inventor Fusion (For Mac) 10:00am -12:30pm

If you would like to learn to design your own 3D objects ready for printing this workshop will give you the tools to get started. All you will need is a Mac running OS X 10.7 or later with a 64-bit processor and download Autodesk Inventor Fusion from the App Store (Free Download).

You will be shown basic modelling to create simple geometric objects that are printable using our RepRap Pro 3D printer. During the day we will have our RepRap Pro printing an example for you to see what can be achieved.

Product Development with Little or No Money 14:30 - 15:30pm

Following on from Brightminded's talk "Business Start Up For Little Or No Money", by Dan Cowan, we take that notion one step further and show how a small business can take an idea and develop it on a tight budget.

Using open source software and readily available hardware we show the process from concept to design to prototype.

Propellernet is a search marketing and social media agency, with additional expertise in content marketing, conversion optimisation and lots of other stuff too.

As part of the Creative, Digital & IT Open Studios week this year, Propellernet welcomes you to our event:

'Will It Make Life Better?'

We make life better for our clients and their customers.

Our clients enjoy a competitive advantage that delivers sustainable business growth ahead of key competitors and their customers get the help they need to take decisions and share experiences. We also make life better for our people too and we were recently recognised as the Best UK Small Business Workplace.

Attendees will be introduced to a way of thinking about marketing that's focused on people and not marketing channels; a way of thinking that, done right, delivers fantastic results. We'll be sharing our skills and experience but there will also be an opportunity for attendees to get involved in an idea generation session to experience how we work in practice.

In terms of who should attend we're fairly open minded; last year we had a mix of recent graduates, experienced professionals, potential partners and others who were simply interested in what we had to say. Everyone's welcome and (hopefully) should enjoy the event.

We'd like to think that spending a couple of hours with our team represents a good learning opportunity. We're good at what we do and have the up-to-date awards to prove it:

European Search Awards 2013
Winner - Best Agency
Winner - Best Pan European Campaign
Winner - Best Young Search Professional
Great Places To Work 2013
Winner - Best UK Small Business Workplace
Brighton and Hove Business Awards 2013
Winner - MD of the Year
Travolution Awards 2013
Finalist (awaiting result) - Best Use of Search Engine Marketing
Fresh Awards 2013
Finalist (awaiting result) - Digital | Sites and Search

Please note: We are going to limit the event to 20 places. If we get more people than that wanting to attend we will, most probably, draw names from a hat a couple of weeks ahead of the event. If we get lots more people wanting to attend we will consider running a second event.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.

Open Studios at Cogapp - Project People Meetup Launch Breakfast

Friday 27th September: 8.30am - 10.30am

We are proudly launching the Project People Meetup at this year's Open Studios.

People make projects, and usually there is one person who is responsible for delivering that project. If that person is you, then the Project People Meetup is the place to be!

PPM is for Project People; people who are responsible for winning and / or delivering projects, and who want to swap tips, problems and experience with others. Whether you manage projects, client accounts, partner or supplier relationships, internal production teams, social media, web or mobile strategies and solutions, you all have something in common: the ability to work with a wide range of people really well; to manage expectations, to manage processes, plus co-ordinate teams and suppliers and other channels, in order to deliver smart solutions to clients.

Join us for coffee & croissants for a chance to talk about the kind of challenges faced by people in these key roles and what might constitute 'best (or better) practice'.

  • How do you let creative minds run free without blowing the budget?
  • How do you make tech and design work harmoniously?
  • What if users don't like what you made?
  • Do wish you had approached a particular project in a different way? What would you do differently?
  • In an open plan office, exactly how much swearing is acceptable when Excel crashes?

We found there wasn't really a forum to talk about this stuff, so this event is designed to provide an opportunity to discuss common problems, debate different approaches, share experiences and exchange knowledge about the role of people in creating success in a virtual world.

The Cogapp Production team are happy to kick off proceedings and talk through some recent projects and challenges and issues we have faced, how we overcame them, what type of approach works really well and how to know when to walk away.

We can feature a Q&A and will have some senior folk around who can offer expert advice, but WE NEED YOU! We're up for sharing our experience to make the digital projects we all work on even better. Join us! If you all find it useful then we'll make it a regular thing.

We hope you can come along.
