Digital Exchange - an innovative approach to improving broadband
Last month, The City Deal was signed by a group of local councils (including Brighton) and Govt ministers. Amid much media ballyhoo and at the request of the Minister for Cities, Greg Clarke, it was formally signed at our home the FuseBox. The deal marks an intention to invest more than £170m in Brighton and the surrounding area.
Wired Sussex helped by advising on the digital cluster elements of the proposal, particularly with reference to our concept for a Digital Exchange (DX) at New England House.

The DX is a model for bulk buying broadband capacity through a new cooperative. We are looking to establish one in New England House, which will enable businesses there to access hi-speeds at affordable rates, with the added bonus of allowing users to tailor their usage models.
So, fingers crossed that the DX plans are given the final ok by the Government. If this proves successful the concept could be expanded beyond New England House to other parts of the city.

Our big Members' Meetup
Members' Meetup, 29th April, from 5.30pm at Above Audio.
Our meetups offer a great opportunity to network with others working in the creative, digital, media and technology (CDIT) sector, from all across Sussex. Find out about the exciting initiatives we are working on; like our intern placement programme, Fusebox 24 and plans for Brighton Digital Festival 2014. Plus, it’s a great way to build industry contacts and hear the latest news from the sector. Still not convinced? Check out these 5 reasons why you should attend

The next member’s meetup is in Brighton on the 29th April and is free to our members, including all employees of member companies, but you will need to register here to guarantee your place. We hope you can join us.

Not sure if your company is a member? Just search our online directory or get in touch.

We are rebuilding our website (at last!)
The Wired Sussex website is a unique and valuable resource – but we know it could be better! Over the coming months we’re looking to revamp the site and are going to start from square one.

To help us begin we’re looking to hire a company or freelancer to carry out a full audit of the current website, consult with our users and write a project brief for a better Wired Sussex site that we can then put out to tender.
If you think you can help check out the full spec. on the project board and do get in touch if you have any questions.

Director's Dinner Events
As part of our events programme, we run small, quarterly dinners for the owners, MDs and CEOs of Wired Sussex member companies.
These exclusive events offer you the opportunity to enjoy a good meal with 10 -12 of your peers and discuss, in an open and collaborative atmosphere, your business and the opportunities and challenges of the sector locally.
The evenings take place in Brighton and are hosted by Alex Cowell, MD, MBA and Jason Woodford, CEO, Site Visibility and Wired Sussex Board Member.
If you would like to find out more about these events or be added to the invitation list for future dinners, please email

The Intern Placement Programme is in full swing
We launched our itern programme only a month ago  and already we’ve received 350 applications for a broad range of exciting roles in (CDIT)  digital, media and tech companies.  With 13 top calibre interns having already started their placements, the scheme has certainly got off to a great start and we’re sure there will be lots of success stories to come.

Not surprisingly, we’re finding that there’s a huge demand from our members to take on a part-funded intern and if you’d like to add your name to our waiting list please register online and we’ll get in touch!

What about freelancers? - Brighton Fuse Phase 2.
There can be few creative-digital professionals in the region that have not heard of the Brighton Fuse project. The research showed the first solid evidence of the astounding growth of the cluster and everyone - from Government ministers, to The Financial Times, to the World Economic Forum - sat up and paid attention. But some voices rightfully asked “what about the freelance sector?”

Well, phase two of the project sets out to address exactly that question, and over the coming months we’ll be reaching out to our freelance members and asking you to complete a short questionnaire, the anonymised data from this survey will form the backbone of the research.
You can find out more about the Brighton Fuse project and how to get involved on the website.

The Grand Challenge is coming to Brighton
Planning is under way to bring the Grand Challenge competition to Brighton this autumn, as part of the Brighton Digital Festival 2014. The winner will spend time in Silicon Valley to participate in Singularity University’s Executive Programme, with a trip paid for by American Express.
The programme aims to bring together future leaders, entrepreneurs and technologists for ten weeks to work on team-based technology solutions to widespread global challenges. You can read more about the competition here.

Funding to improve your Broadband
This month the Connection Voucher Scheme launched to provide funding of up to £3,000 (excluding VAT) for small businesses, charities and voluntary organisations to access faster broadband connection speeds.
Take a look at the press release on the Brighton and Hove Council website to see if you’re eligible to benefit.

Latest short-term work & project opportunities
A significant benefit of Wired Sussex membership is getting to hear about the latest fixed-term and project work opportunities within the sector, either by networking with other members or by accessing our exclusive projects board.

Anyone - from local boutiques to multinational agencies - can post project details on the board so the projects range greatly, with everything from product photography to e-Commerce platforms builds. However, what they all have in common is a need for help from digital and media experts. To access the details of each project you must be a Wired Sussex member.

Here’s a couple of the latest: Don’t forget you can add your own Project to our board free of charge!

Whether you need an agency to design and develop a website, a freelancer to work on a short term project, or even a business partner for a new venture?  We can help so get in touch!
