The Sussex Internship Programme

Portfolio image The Sussex Internship Programme is now widely recognised as the best of its kind in the country. It provides recent graduates with 30 days of invaluable work based training with some of the hottest media companies in the county. All internships are grant-supported and include additional training.

If you want to be a journalist, marketer or web developer, then there are some great internships on offer now including: Editorial Research Assistant, Web Editorial Projects Assistant, Digital Media and Marketing Assistant, Production Assistant, Flash Developer, Web Designer, Mobile Device Software Developer, Games Programmer, and User Experience and Usability Assistant.

As part of the application process we have created a series of career tips including advice on writing the perfect covering letter and how to prepare for an interview.

Wired Sussex Media Jobs + Skills Fair

Last year, our jobs and skills fair saw over 1000 job seekers attending a packed-out Corn Exchange. This year we are kicking it up a gear! Not only will the event will feature over 20 local media companies looking to recruit new talent, we will have a series of panel sessions aimed at demystifying the media industry and advice on freelance working. We are also holding a series of practical workshops designed to help guide you through the application process from writing an attention grabbing CV through to shining in your interview.

We have local colleges and universities providing advice on further training and course available to help progress your career opportunities. The day will conclude with a presentation and networking session from the University of Sussex’s Enterprise Thursday team.

Multiplatform Training for Media Professionals

Glug logo In partnership with Brighton training experts Lighthouse, Wired Sussex is running two practical weekend courses for TV and other media professionals. Both courses will cover various aspects of Multiplatform Media production. Wired Sussex members are eligible for a 10% discount on the courses, and an additional 10% is available for people who book places on both courses.

Multiplatform (factual) - The Creative Opportunity vs. The Production Challenge runs from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th March 2010. The course will enable media professionals to learn how to effectively manage the creativity process on multiplatform projects.

Making It Pay: The Business of Multiplatform Media, runs from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th March 2010. The course will offer significant insight to experienced media professionals who need to understand how to make the commercial and legal realities of the new multiplatform media world work for them.

Both courses run in Brighton and are included on the Skillset TV Freelance Fund list of eligible multiplatform courses. This means that attendees may be entitled to a subsidy of up to 80% of the cost of these courses (early application is recommended). Make it into Media image The start of the year is a hotbed of activity. We have a great mix of events and training sessions coming up over the next few months including:

Women in Media – Our popular network for women who working in media or looking to break in to the media sector hosts a breakfast meet up at The Sanctuary Café this month. Jenni Lloyd of NixonMcInnes will give a talk on Building Your Network Using Social Media. The event is on 21st January, full details are available on the Women in Media website.

Open Door Thursday – Every Thursday we cancel all meetings and throw the doors open on the Wired Sussex Office. If you have a project that you need help with, an event that you want to promote or you just are keen to meet the team get in touch and come along.

Open Members Meet up – We will be holding another of our popular, informal meet ups for members in February. Come along to meet other members and the Wired Sussex team. This meet up will be in Worthing at The Burlington Hotel on 11th February from 6.30pm. Register to attend.

HR Managers Network – We are working with Brighton-based solicitors Martin Searle and local businesses Madgex and Relentless Software on a new HR Network. Aimed at bringing digital media HR Managers together to share best practice, this new network kick starts on Thursday 28th January with an event at Madgex’s office on North Street. If you are interested in joining this network, contact Nick at Wired Sussex. .
