The Digital Roundup
Lots of great member news this month, and the first shout-out goes to Make Real who secured investment to fund the growth of their studio and development of VR and immersive products. They’ve also been busy creating immersive experiences for McDonald’s, Investec, and local charity Stay Up Late.
Congratulations to Fugu PR; they were awarded a special Mark of Excellence at the prestigious CIPR awards for their PR work on Brighton’s bike sharing scheme, BTN BikeShare.
We saw a fantastic showreel from Buff Motion showcasing their animation and motion graphics work over the past year.
Great news from Mojeek; the crawler-based search engine has reached its 2 billion page milestone, making them one of the largest web search indexes in the world!
Big announcement from Brandwatch and Pi Datametrics who have partnered up to take Brandwatch’s data visualisation platform, Vizia, to the next level by combining their search and social media expertise.
Happy 25th anniversary to Designate! They celebrated in style on Brighton Pier and raised over £3000 for the local community-led campaign, Galvanise.
High-five to Ocasta; their employee engagement, learning, operations and compliance platform Oplift is now available through G-cloud 10; the Government's digital marketplace for IT products and services.
Good news from Elucidat; their elearning platform and collaboration tool has been implemented by the Open University to handle the increased demand for their OpenLearn courses.
Exciting times for our member Warren Hill; he’s just launched a new digital marketing agency, built on a network of freelancers, called Dream Digital.
We saw a cool new site from Curate Labs & Magazine; they recently published a Culture Manual to share their processes and values.
Congrats to Strategic Management Partners; they won the Seahaven Award for Environmental Business of the Year for their work supporting the development of 200 East Sussex eco-innovation companies.
And finally, Brighton was featured in the news for being one of the UK’s booming tech hubs, with mentions of our growing gaming scene and annual digital festival!

What does our sector want from an economic strategy for Brighton?
Monday 16th July, 6-7:30pm at The FuseBox
Brighton & Hove City Council is currently developing a new economic strategy for the city which they claim will be ‘disruptive’ and ‘trailblazing’.
 
At this special event ‘A New Economic Strategy for Brighton & Hove’, you will get the chance to hear more about that strategy from the Council’s Executive Director of Economy, Environment & Culture Nick Hibberd, and then discuss how it fits with your challenges as a digital company or freelancer doing business in the city.

Talent2018: photos, videos & outcomes
Last month we ran Talent2018, our three-day skills festival for the digital sector, designed to help digital businesses attract, train and retain the talent they need in order to thrive.
 
Alongside showcasing the best job opportunities in the sector at a Jobs Fair; members came together at the Skills Summit to learn from one another, explore strategies to help develop a sustainable talent pool and to discuss the collective challenges we face. Following the festival, we’re collating the insights and will be sharing them soon!
 
Talks from the Jobs Fair and Skills Summit are available to watch on YouTube and we also have loads of pictures from the festival on our Facebook page.

At our next VR Brighton Meetup, we’ll delve into the world of immersive games and gaming. Come and hear talks from Sam Watts from Make Real about their exciting work and projects, including their highly successful Oculus partnered game Loco Dojo, and Phil Greenspan from Oculus on how to produce and launch a VR game.

Artificial Intelligence: Growing Local Knowledge & Expertise
Wednesday 11th July, 6-8pm at The FuseBox
Are you interested (or working) in Artificial Intelligence? The University of Sussex is planning a doctoral training centre with a specific emphasis on AI and wants to discuss it with Wired Sussex member companies to ensure it is framed and developed with you in mind. Plus, the project will give businesses access to a locally-based, world-class centre of excellence in AI.
