The Digital Newsround

Congratulations this month go to BozBoz, who have launched the sparkly new site for the brilliant Brighton Institute of Modern Music – always great to see local clients using local talent.  Great to see both Brighton Festival and Brighton and Hove City Council also following suit, with the former’s new site designed and built by local company (and WS member) they create, and  the latter using Brighton-based Littoralis for a newly-designed app for their Crime Reduction Partnership.  And finally congrats to Brandwatch, who have just raised a staggeringly impressive £6 million to expand overseas, to Plug-in Media who this month launch TreeFuFum interactive games for a new CBeebies series, and to the University of Sussex, whose Science and Technology Think tank, SPRU, has been named the best in the country

Brighton Digital Festival - Opening and Closing Events

Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of digital culture that happens in venues across the city, throughout September. The festival returns in 2012 and after the successes of last year, we think there's really something to shout about. The festival's steering group (which we're on) is looking for great projects to open and close the festival, so we'd like to invite our community to send ideas. We're seeking ideas from energetic people who have got the time and passion to organise these events. You'll receive the full support of the steering group, and we will help out in any way we can. Brighton Digital Festival has no core funding as yet, - it happens because of the goodwill of the community - so there is no money attached to this, but we may be able to support you in applying for funding. So we are looking for ideas that might be scalable to work both with and without financial support.  To find out more, join the festival google group.

3 x Tedx Brighton 2012

2012 sees not just 1 but 3 Sussex-based independent versions of international ideas event, TED, take place (never heard of it?  View the talks online here from this year’s event, which happened a week ago in the US).  Last weekend saw the Lighthouse play host to a live simulcast of Tedx Observer 2012 plus additional talks,  the student-run TedX Sussex University  is ready to go this April, and TedX Brighton 2012 is shaping up to be a brilliant event in October.  Independent organiser Natalie Lloyd  and her team are doing sterling work, but she needs your help to make it happen – get in touch with her to suggest speaker names or volunteer help with design, marketing, event production or anything else you think might be useful.  If you or the organisation you work for are interested in getting involved in sponsoring the event (either in-kind, as a media partner or with real actual money!), please feel free to talk to us or Natalie about that.

Brighton Fuse

Activity progresses apace on the Brighton Fuse, our R + D project with the local universities which aims to enhance the creative, digital and IT cluster in Brighton.  Two new Advisory Board members join us this month –Helen Jay from Channel 4, and Tony Beckwith, CEO of  startup Gobo Games and former CEO of Disney Blackrock.  We’ve just launched a site for the project – so check it out, sign up to become involved in the project further down the line, access the research and the debate as it happens. You can also  follow the project on twitter @brightonfuseA key part of the project will be a detailed questionnaire which we will be distributing to all  Wired Sussex member companies  and other creative and digital businesses in the city. Keep an eye out for it, and if you are able, please do fill it in – the anonomised survey findings will be made available to everyone who completes the questionaire, so by participating you’ll deepen your own knowledge and understanding of what it means to be working in the digital and creative industries in Brighton.

Projects Board

Wired Sussex Projects Board hit 40 projects this month – and it’s growing all the time.  For those not aware of it, it’s a free-to-use resource for anyone wanting to commission any kind of digital work – be it a new website design and build, a smaller coding project, design, film, marketing, copywyriting, seo help, research, illustration or social media  project – the list goes on.  You post a basic brief online; Wired Sussex members can then pitch directly to you for the work.  Check out current projects here, and do ask us any questions.  And if you’re a Wired Sussex member, don’t forget to login and sign up to receive email or RSS alerts every time a project is posted – your next freelance gig could come from here.

Happy one hundred to the Skiff

It’s been a really exciting few months for Brighton coworking space the Skiff, with a big expansion and improvements to the space happening all the time.  This month saw the number of skiffmates (who rent desks on a permanent or occasional basis) pass the 100 mark for the first time – it’s a really growing, vibrant community.  The expansion has meant more desks are now available, so if you’re a freelancer and growing disenchanted with your kitchen table, pop down and have a look today.  Joining the skiff coworking community starts  at just £29 per month.  We’re now throwing in free membership to Wired Sussex (worth £49 + VAT annually) for every coworker– as long as you are a skiffmate, your Wired Sussex membership (with all the benefits that brings) is valid.

Events this month

Thanks to those who came to our members meetups in Brighton and Eastbourne last month – fantastic to see so many there.  In case you missed it, we had a meet-up for Lewes members yesterday evening and have another two events later this month: one to introduce members to the new Head of Computing, Engineering & Mathematics at the University of Brighton, Miltos Petridis, and a fundraising/networking charity event, Wired for Sound, on 31st.  There are limited places available for the first event, Home Brewed: Miltos Petridis, so get in touch if you’d like to come along; and plenty of tickets left for the second, Wired for Sound, here.  Lastly, we're pleased to be sponsoring See Festival 2012, a celebration of international documentaries hosted in Brighton - tickets now available for individual events from £5, so check them out here.

Featured Event: Open Data Cities Conference

The UK’s first Open-data Cities Conference will take place in Brighton on Friday, April 20 2012, at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange.  We're really happy that Wired Sussex can help support getting this high-profile conference  off the ground.  It will focus on how publicly-funded organisations can openly share data and thus support the growth of more creative, prosperous and accountable communities.  It features a great line up of speakers from smart cities guru Lean Doody to mysociety founder Tom Steinberg.  If you're a Wired Sussex member you can get a 25% discount off the ticket price by using the code WiredSussex when you book online hereMore on the conference here, or contact organiser Greg Hadfield
